I traveled to Buenos Aires and stayed in Castelar hotel in the pre-season, mid-November. Unexpectedly the staff seemed overly busy even though there were no tourist crowds to be seen. In spite of this I was able to receive a fair amount of help. The spa at the hotel was full of elderly people, who seemed like regulars, which is one reason why I can only recommend this hotel to business or senior travelers. The spa itself it very old-fashioned by today's standards an would probably not appeal to other groups. The massage was nice, but the massagist left a door ajar and attracted a crowd of letchy senior peeping toms. I won't go back.
I gave my room a very low rating because the odor of mothballs was asphyxiating. I was too tired to vociferously complain, but in spite of sleeping two night with the tiny window open, the smell was consistently strong. As far as I know the entire hotel was the same. My air conditioner did not work, no reply given, and one of my nights turned out to be unbearably hot.

| "The Castelar is a very nice hotel with lots of character and is centrally located. Its restaurant provides a good selection of food and beverages at very good value prices. The rooms are large in keeping with the era of construction (1929). The only downsides that we found were that the front rooms seem to get a lot of traffic noise at night (but that's typical of most of Buenos Aires city) and there seems to be a permanent hint of cigarette odour in the room from decades of smoking (although no smoking is permitted now). Overall, it is a great hotel with very helpful and friendly staff." |

| "Hotel is undergoing a lot of renovation and lifts were on the blink most of the time.
Also, only one PC available for web-browsing so beware if you rely on this to check your emails, it is always busy.
Also, staff dont speak almost any english at all.
Other than that, very clean, very central, very good value. Not a "typical" american or UK 4-star hotel but definitely good value for money" |

| "We stayed already two times in Hotel Castelar and were
very satisfied about the service and facilities. We will
certainly recommend this hotel for its location. Anyway
if we should go back to Buenos Aires we will certainly
choose again for that hotel." |
