We stayed at Sails in the Desert - in a spa room. The room was large and the jacuzzi on the patio was enclosed with shutters to allow privacy if desired. The hotel was obviously a bit older, but still in overall good shape. We tried the buffet (Winkiku?) at Sails at the very end of the evening. The service was excellent, and the food was plentiful, but not extremely tender or tasty (this may have been due to the lateness of the hour). Housekeeping could use improvement. The toilet was dirty when we arrived (not just the mineral stains on the bowl that were 'explained' on a separate note from management) - it had obviously not been well cleaned. The shower curtain was wet and smelly when we arrived - it had not been changed prior to our visit. When we asked for both problems to be addressed, the shower curtain was replaced, but the toilet was only minimally cleaned. Staff was very friendly at all locations.

"This is an excellent hotel with good facilities and a top restaurant. The industrial architecture of the rooms complex is the only real downside. If you are going to Ayers Rock, then this hotel makes the ideal base from which to explore."

"Unfortunately there aren't too many choices of hotels in Ayers Rock. Sails in the Desert is touted as the best but it did not measure up to the standards of comparably priced hotels elsewhere. We were able to get a great rate through Asia Rooms but it was still not a good value considering the facilities of the hotel. The rooms are very basic, the restaurants very pricey and the grounds mediocre. The patio furniture was dirty with cobwebs on the chairs. The staff though was very friendly and helpful and that was a plus. They accommodated us with a hospitality room after we had to check out so that we could clean up after our tour that day. On the whole they could do a lot to warrant the prices they charge."

"I'm probably not the right person to write an unbiased review about this hotel. We originally had 2 spa rooms booked, one for myself and my husband and the other for our 2 teenage children. It was quite expensive however we were told that there were no rooms available to take the 4 of us and we wanted the weekend to be memorable. When we arrived the hotel had upgraded one of the rooms to the Presidential Suite... now you can understand why I am biased. Unbeknown to the hotel, our baggage had missed the connecting flight and wouldn't be arriving until sometime the next day so we did have to spend more time than we planned in our rooms. It was fabulous having a private spa on the balcony in the spa room and all the extra space in the Presidential Suite. It definitely gets my vote."
