Hotel Review posted by Pierre Ferland, Canada in October 2005

The Stamford Plaza Hotel in Melbourne is really a first class hotel. My wife and I were outstandlingly treated. The rooms are well designed and are fully equipped with most of the amenities normally found in our own house. The staff is attentive and will go out of its way to please the customer. The bottle of champagne we received as a welcome present on our arrival was really appreciated as my wife and I were actually celebrating our 40th weeding anniversary. Although the Queen size bed was adequate, a King size bed would really add a lot of value to the hotel rooms. On the other hand, given the dimension of the bedroom, such a size will most likely not be suitable.

"It is difficult to know where to begin, check in was surly, in my room I checked the internet charges and was horrified spoke to reception and said that I would change hotels, no reaction whatsoever, asked for a manager to call me which didn't happen. Back in my room I decided to pay internet charges and because I was prepaid decided to stay the four nights. Big mistake, first internet did not work, staff unable to help other than the switch off and try again approach. I found the problem it was a broken connector at the wall, this was replaced by maintenance but I lost an hour of connection. Next morning I asked that a light bulb over the bed be replaced and that I be shown how to switch off the light over the cooker which along with the bathroom light is not controlled by the so called Master Switch. Arrived back that evening nothing had been done called housekeeping again and same maintenance man came and fixed things. There is minimal storage in the room had my wife been with me we certainly would not have stayed. Ordered room service dinner and selected all day breakfast, this came with one egg not two as shown in the menu and was arguably the worst meal I have ever had, sausages, grilled tomato and hash brown simply inedible. The lamps in my room leaned at drunken angles because they were not connected securely to the base posing a potential danger of electrocution, All wall lights hung at crazy angles and the lighting was generally very poor for a working environment. The television would have looked more at home in a cheap motel, reception on the cable channels was very poor and there was not a single business channel so no market information. I used the unattended gym and was constantly disturbed by children racing through to their room on the other side, I was also disturbed by children running up and down outside my room as I tried to work. I asked in the morning if a suit could be pressed quickly as I had a meeting, I was told they would send it out and return it at 6.00pm I never once saw a manager and nobody ever asked me how things were. Summary A cold sterile impersonal hotel not at all suited to the business traveller. Altogether awful should be rated no higher than 3 stars "

"Our 1 bedroom suite was excellent and location perfect. Although our accommodation was prepaid we still had to provide a credit card swipe (in case we used the mini bar or room service). While this was understandable we were not advised that a $100 charge was put through on our card and only removed after about 5 days. I think this should have been explained to us upfront. Apart from this everything else was very satisfactory."
