Would I stay at this location
again:

Absolutely!
After a great deal of traveling round Cambodia we were ready for some quiet beach life in Sihanoukville with a bit of pampering and we certainly found it here. Whilst this hotel can appear like a concrete block on some websites, we found it to be a very appealing design in the modernist tradition, having been completely refurbished in 2007. The hotel is steeped in history with it being a favoured hotel of King Sihanouk back in the day (who also did the original interior design no less!) and it is superbly appointed to a very high standard since its reopening last year. More like a 5 star we thought. The Cambodian prime minister was visiting on our last day there. All the rooms have unbeatable sea views (can be seen even from the bath tub) and the rooms have a/c, tv, fridge, safe, mini bar as standard. The private Independence Beach is on its door step down a 2 minute path where there are beach towels for guests, bar and restaurant. The best thing about this beach was that it was largely deserted. The sea was warm, there are sun loungers and some shade under trees. We ventured into the town of Sihanoukville on 2 brief occasions during our four night stay (about a 5 minutes tuk tuk ride - although there is a free shuttle service for guests) and couldn't wait to get back. Serendipity Beach was too crowded, dirty and touristy for our tastes and were so thankful we'd found such a haven of tranquility. Sihanoukville town appears to be almost without any redeeming features - ugly, smelly and only worth visiting for banks or essential shopping. Food was good quality, not that expensive but the breakfast was definitely the winning meal for us. So much food; its a buffet and a delicious. combination of western and Asian food - I loved the fresh noodle soup for breakfast. Service was excellent - it felt a little like stepping back in time to a more glamorous age.

"We enjoyed our stay here. Staff was very pleasant and helpful. Some may find the location a bit quiet but for us it was ideal and only a $3 bike ride to town. Beach was especially nice as was the pool. The grounds were clean and well maintained. As this a newly renovated hotel there are a few teething problems which management is working hard to correct. The gym needs some upgraded and extra equipment which is in the plans when the spa is completed. People expecting a spa should check to see if it is completed as it was not available when we were there. Highly recommend ASIA ROOMS as they proved in their dealings with us that they are a very efficient company"

"Beautifull stay. Helpfull staff. Ask for highest floor to have seaview. Good breakfast. Nice restaurant with good food for a acceptable price. One small point. We upgraded our room to have sea view. Asiarooms asked 14 dollar a night, but our credit card was blocked thanks to loss/theft. The hotel added four times 30 dollar!! The director( who lookes after our wellbeing very much) wasn't willing to change that afterwords. Pitty, but we will come back. One of the most beautifull locations in Sihanoukville. But ask for fifth flour!!"

"Lovely experience all round, location, staff and amenities all great. The only fault we could find really was with the food and the service of the food. It was often cold and staff did not seem to understand that we wanted to eat our food hot! But I believe that the hotel only recently re-opened and that all staff were probably new there. Hopefully this area will improve over time as we would stay at the hotel again in the future."

"I stayed at The Independence with a college friend for three nights. We were impressed with the architecture and facilities, though the spa was not yet open. Our only complaint was that the hotel is located two beaches away from the busier parts of town and the hotel shuttle was far too infrequent. Pictures of the hotel back in its hay-day are nice to view."
