3/5  Posted by John, United Kingdom in November 2006
"An excellently appointed hotel (internet ready computer in the room - nice touch), perfect for getting around with a tube station literally at the front door, but unfortunately the customer sevice approach did not live up to expectations. The first indication of this was a sign in the room that said that guests were only allowed one cup of coffee per guest per day(??). Then I was unable to cash AMEX travellers cheques at reception at 9pm in the evening despite being asked to countersign them first - very bad practice - apparently because Lloyds TSB was not recognised by them as a trustworthy issuing bank (their opinion not mine) and the attitude of the clerkess was dreadful for a hotel of this standing. Finally got them cashed next evening after a lot of effort & phone calls by staff. However the crux for me came on the last day when I went down for breakfast prior to checking out, I signed for it only to be told halfway through that the front desk would not let me sign for it and I had to pay cash. The waitress hovered over me whilst I ate my food and followed me to my room to collect the 90 yuan in cash (about 6 quid) - I don't know who was most embarassed - me or her. I just paid my account at reception and left - I don't think they would have appreciated my comments at that point! All in all I came away after this not even wanting to go back to Beijing although I have now cooled down as this was my only bad experience in China (and the Great Wall at Simatei is a must see!). So I will go back to this lovely friendly city but I will choose a different hotel. John - Aberdeen, Scotland"
