Founded by the Richard's family, this was the very first western hotel property that came up in China after Shanghai became a trading port. The present Location of Astor House Hotel in Shanghai is not the same as its original location at Shanghai bund near Wangpoo River. In the year 1857, the hotel was moved to where it stands now, the north end of Baidu Bridge and was renamed as Astor House Hotel.

In the year 1907(Qing Dynasty,Guangxu period), the hotel was extended to an England new classical style building.
