Overall, the Astor House (Pujiang Hotel) is reasonable value for money in a good location near the Bund. The rooms are huge by Chinese standards, although sparsely furnished which gave me a feeling of wasted space. The floors tended to be dirty throughout, so I suggest wearing shoes at all times, including in the room. It's an old hotel and is certainly dated in appearance, although this gives it a certain charm over the modern skyscrapers in Shanghai. Limited natural light results in a dark ambience throughout. If possible, secure a room with something of a view - some of the rooms look onto a central courtyard which isn't very appealing. The included breakfast was plentiful in choice and is provided in the main hall of the hotel which has real old world charm. The choices from the room service menu were limited and the food of average quality. The level of English spoken was ok (front desk staff) but limited English spoken by the rest of the staff I came in contact with. It costs around 40RMB in a taxi from this hotel to Hongqiao Airport. Around 25RMB from the train station if you decide to take the fast train from Pudong Airport. As always in China, have the hotel details available in Chinese for the taxi driver. Have booked rooms through AsiaRooms before and will continue to do so.

"We were absolutely delighted with this hotel. It was the first time we'd booked and paid for a hotel over the internet through Asiarooms.com but it was fantastic. We stayed in a Deluxe Room on the 6th floor (top floor) which was very tidy, clean and was beautifully furnished. The bathroom was very nice and grand - only slight complaint was it didn't have a bath. The hotel is perfectly located, a short stroll over the bridge to The Bund with a number of small restaurants and convenience stores nearby. The reception staff spoke good english and were very helpful. Didn't try the breakfast as this wasn't included in our rate, but they had a big dining hall and 2 bars on the ground floor. If you're looking for the last shred of history in such an ultra modern city - stay at this hotel!"

"It was a great hotel. Didn't have the latest conveniences or brand new everything but made up for it in character and location. "

"Great place when I was there stayed in an executive suite, close to bridge and fantastic views of Pearl Tower, good food, quiet, friendly people, clean rooms, etc. Don't stay in rooms too close to Exec greeting desk, a bit noisy. Architecture is nice and it is an old classic building. I am staying there again soon as I live in Suzhou (1 hour west of Shanghai) and this is a great place for me although far from metro but Taxi's are cheap. Only problem is there is no elevators!!! If you have bad knees or walking problems, not the place for you."

"Great stay. The old style of the hotel is wonderful. The service is good and it's so nice after struggling in the country side. If you really want to be picky the only thing missing was a swimming pool ;-)"

"Good for travelers with a historic taste and love for old style hotels. Broadband service is slow and too expensive."
