The hotel is shabby and desperatly in need of a renovation. It has a very seedy and sleazy feel, and the lobby was full of chain smoking people when we were checking in.
Our room had seen better days, but it was clean overall. The biggest issue I found with our room was that despite being on a non smoking floor, when we turned on the air conditioning, our whole room smelt like cigarette smoke within minutes.
The buffet breakfast is not worth the bother, as it mostly caters for budget chinese tour groups. Just don't expect any service during that time as we had to sit at a dirty table which nobody had bothered to clear after the previous diners had finished. Also, be eary of ordering room service from the restaurant. We frequently saw room service food being delievered by waiters on the elevator in uncovered plates.
Overall, I guess you do get what you pay for, but the Canaan really needs to lift its game if it is to even deserve it's supposed 3 star rating.

| "Although it does take some time to find this hotel it is well worth the search. Certainly not as high end as the Bell Tower that I'd stayed at the week previous
but well worth the money at half the price of the Bell Tower. Rooms are large,
had the best shower I'd had in China in 4 weeks. Front desk people spoke very good English. Only two problems, the broadband in the room didn't work and the bathroom painting needs some attention. Go out back, down the alley and around the corner and you can have a great Chinese breakfast from the vendors on the street." |

| "The hotel was very difficult to locate and it was difficult to speak to an English speaking person at the hotel to get directions. The reception and porter staff tried to sell us a tour package to see the Terracotta Warriors and became very pushy and aggressive despite telling them numerous times we weren't interested - including knocking on our room door a different times to attempt selling the package again!
We were surprised to be told that we were not able to pay for laundry services at the end of the stay and that we had to pay cash for this up front. When checking this with reception after making payment we were told that it had been billed to our account. Very dodgy but was resolved by the very helpful management staff. I would not recommend staying in this hotel." |

| "Room was absolutely filthy - 'facilities' were entirely inappropriate - TV did not work - water dispenser was a health hazard - PC appeared to only work in Chinese with no instructions in English or any other language - a hotel this dirty should no get a star rating, or indeed a licence to operate at all" |

| "The room was only ok. Descent size but the beds were hard (seemed usual across the country though) and you could feel the springs. The bathroom was old and looked dirty even though it was probably clean. I am a non smoker but the room smelt like it was previously smoked in and they had sprayed air fresher which was VERY over powering. The location was excellent. Easy to walk around the shops in the street below and get to the bell and drum towers." |
