"The Sofitel on Renmin was outstanding, totally 5 star. beautiful huge rooms, modern design and loads of nice art work all over the place. Only 2 minor grips, it is a little out of the town centre but if you enjoy a walk it is not to stressful. The other is trying to book a tour, I had 2 nights in Xian but all the hotel would offer is a private tour with the hotel car and a hotel guide, that was going to be outrageously expensive, in the end we went to a hotel in town and used their service desk."

"facilities ok if you are anywhere near them and not in the other wing. Staff very good Rooms dated for what is supposedly a 5 star hotel"

"Wonderfully, pleasant hotel. So nice and clean with beautiful decor and beautiful objects of art (especially ceramic vases and bowls. I thought it was a perfect place to stay with facilities! Thank you."

"The Sofitel is a great place to stay. Walkable distance from the Bell and Drum Towers and the Muslim quarter of Xi'an. By taxi, you pay only the starting rate on the meter which is about 6 RMB (little under a dollar). We were just unfortunate that the travel agency used by AsiaRooms made the mistake of canceling our booking altogether instead of making a change that had been confirmed. As a result, it took some long distance phone calls to AsiaRooms (which depleted my phonecard) before I could sort it out with Sofitel and eventually get our room nearly two hours after arrival. Considering we were only staying for one day, it was precious waste of time for us. We intended to visit the Terracotta Warriors in the afternoon but had to do it the next morning instead. The manager agreed to let us check out at 1:30 pm instead of noon only when I reminded him of the hold up at check-in the previous day. Everyone was very cordial and we enjoyed our buffet breakfast. Really good breads. The only thing that took some getting used to was the opaque glass partition between the room and bathroom. The door is also a sliding opaque glass door that was difficult to close completely. The shower stall didn't offer much privacy when you turned on the lights. I can't imagine anyone not liking the Sofitel at Renmin Square. BTW, the hotel is located in a complex that includes other Accor hotels as well. So if you can't get a room here try the others at the same address."

"We thouroughly enjoyed our room. It was very spacious, had a couch, study table and plenty of space for a baby cot. The food for breakfast was great and room service was very good too. We had a great time! Its a pity we only stayed two nights."

"My wife & I arrived in Xian on the evening of 14th Jan 08 & were told that it had just started snowing. The Sofitel hotel foyer & room were 5 star (& we have stayed 5 star all over the world). Staff were very nice & polite. Only a few could have an English chat but we expected that. After check in the concierge said they could arrange a nice car & driver to the TC Warriors for 890 RMB which was a bit pricey to what we had been told. Very early next morning we went to see if we could get an ordinary taxi out there & back. It had snowed all night. We were told by Sofitel that all main roads out there were shut & snowed in & no cars or buses were going anywhere & that was it. We tried the Bus 306 but that was cancelled too. The local buses 914 & 915 were still going out to the TCW but stopping at about 20 bus stops out there - 2 hour ride in the slushy snow (no tourist shops though). We met some tourists who caught the Bus 914. We did not trust these buses so avoided them. Went to the Bell Tower Hotel & met a nice American lady in the foyer waiting for her tour bus & told us to go up to Panda Tours on the 2nd floor. The girl at Panda Tours told us that we either couldnt get on a tour bus or they did not fit with our schedule (we were flying out at 5.30pm that night). The girl made so many calls to various taxi drivers but they were all chicken to go out on the slushy snow. She eventually found one with some guts & 20 mins later we were off. For 600 RMB he picked us up in his brand new nice VW, stopped at 2 sections of the city walls so we could have a quick look & then took us straight to the TCW (2 hour ride in the slushy snow on side roads), waited 2 or 3 hours there for us which was plenty, & then drove us straight to the airport (2 hour ride in the slushy snow - mainly on side roads & then last bit on H/Way). Did not stop at any tourist shops. Made it to the airport 2 or 3 hours b4 our flight to Beijing. Was so fantastic we also tipped him a further 50 RMB."

"Room: Perfect. Definitely one of the best I've stayed in. Actually got an upgrade to a premier room due to some confusion over my booking! The room was large and sparkling new, the bathroom spotless- can't ask for more! Facilities: I'm not a buffet breakfast fan- but the breakfast does offer a huge variety of choices. Go for the "double-sided egg" (sunny-side-up egg flipped & cooked on other side) rather than scrambled eggs or the omelette- no hotel buffet breakfast ever does the latter two properly. Service: Fantastic. Staff spoke Enlish, and was helpful, courteous despite the confusion over our booking- with the result being that we got an upgraded room! Location: Sort of in the "uptown" end, rather than being where the action is (where the three-star business hotels tend to congregate). In warmer weather this would not be a problem- esp. if you are a keen walker. But taxis are dirt cheap in China- just get the doorman to call one in- it cost about 6-8Y cab fare to get "downtown" from the hotel (less than or approximately $1 in any western currency) Value: Obviously pricier than staying in a backpacker's hostel or a three-star business hotel, but where else can you get Sofitel service for less than $AUD100 per room per night (Dec 2007 prices)???? An absolute bargain!"

"This is a beautiful hotel with excellent services and facilities. All tours can be arranged on site, food is excellent, rooms, room amenities and room service is excellent. I used the gym facilities and they were adequate for the hotel. Walking distance to town centre and local shops. Highly recommended."

"A lovely retreat after a big day of touring around all the wonderful sights in Xian. Only a couple of minor things - the bath tub would be very difficult to get out of for someone not agile, and there was a stain on the lampshade and a couple of cigarette burns that should have been attended to on one of the tables. We felt that a 5 star resort should be attentive to those things. Otherwise, the room was excellent, staff couldn't have been nicer or more attentive. The food was great! Everything was good value in our opinion. Handily located on Renmin Square. Highly recommended. Thanks Sofitel! You DO have the nicest places to stay!"
