| From the year 1995, the use of motorways and expressways by motor vehicles having at least four wheels or by a combination of vehicles has been subject to a fee in the territory of the Czech Republic. The payment of this fee is made by the purchase of a two-part sticker (hereinafter "sticker") and is provided for in Act No 13/1997 Coll. on roads and in the amendment to this Act No 102/2000 Coll.
The first part of the sticker has to be affixed by its whole part on the inside windscreen of the motor vehicle (or the first motor vehicle in a combination of vehicles) and has to be placed on the right hand corner so that the driver’s viewpoint from the vehicle is not limited and the sticker can be seen from outside of the vehicle. The driver keeps the second part of the sticker for the purposes of an eventual inspection by the Police of the Czech Republic.
Both parts of the sticker have to have a completed licence plate number according to the vehicle.
The price is not mentioned on the sticker; the purchaser can check it at sale points on the basis of a price list which must be presented here. The sticker is valid if the following conditions are fulfilled: the sticker contains information about the licence plate number (on both parts of the sticker) which shall be in accordance with the licence plate number of the motor vehicle or the first motor vehicle of a combination of vehicles.
In the case of a change of the vehicle’s licence plate, the sticker does not change; both parts have identical designation – two-letter series and a six-digit order number; in the case of time stickers (with one-month validity, ten-days validity and one-day validity) the part of the sticker affixed on the windscreen contains information about the validity - carried out by the seller by means of pincers – corresponding to the period when motorways or expressways can be used by the motor vehicle or by the combination of vehicles.
The time sticker without information about the validity is invalid; its value corresponds at least to the amount of the fee for the appropriate total weight of the motor vehicle or a combination of vehicles. After the termination of the validity of the sticker, the affixed part has to be removed from the windscreen.
Note: We recommend the drivers to check, in their own interest, the beginning of the time sticker’s validity (all excluding the stickers with one-year validity) – designation thereof is the responsibility of the seller - at the time of purchase.
In the case of using a means of transport that is subject to the fee without a valid sticker, the Police of the Czech Republic can impose a penalty of up to CZK 5 000.
Note: In the time of publication of this information, the Parliament of the Czech Republic approved an amendment to the Act on infractions where the mentioned amount is increased to CZK 15 000.
