For Shangri La fans - this hotel...
For Shangri La fans - this hotel does not compare to the Shangri La(s) in Singapore or Sydney which set very hight standards indeed, but it is still a good hotel. We stayed in a Horizon Club room with an attractive view of the Marina ... a very nice room indeed and breakfast was good too. It is certainly the best hotel we have found or know of in Cairns.
Staff were friendly, although a bit sparce on the ground. The hotel is clean and decorated to a good standard, but the design of the building is long and thin - so it can be a bit of a walk to your room. The Horizon Club lounge is OK - but a bit unwelcoming in it's design and looks out on the car park. It is was the quality of our room and it's view which pleased us most.
If we were staying in Cairns again we would likely go back here.

It's a not very sanitary hotel! We joined a tour and lived three days there at the end of July 2005. We had nine rooms, only one room was OK, the others: the TV sets, tables, shelves were covered with thick dust; unclean bathtub; I saw a men's sock under my bed; when we went to take breakfast, I found the bowls very dirty, some small animals fought the fruits with us, they was dotted over the fruits. I can't believe it's a 4 star hotel! It's terrible!
Great location right on the Cairns main...
Great location right on the Cairns main pier, beautiful rooms. Marina view is well worth the extra cost. However, through early 2005 a construction project will be ongoing, and the sounds of jackhammers and demolition drilling are inescapable. They are re-doing the entire first floor, and the second floor is the only floor with rooms, so no room other than possibly the executive suites is unaffected by the noise. It was impossible for us in July 2004 to have stayed in at the hotel to relax during the day. Once this is completed, this hotel would have my highest recommendation. Until then, you could probably do better elsewhere.
