This is probably the worst place I've...
This is probably the worst place I've stayed in Australia. Overpriced, substandard rooms, surly owners and service bordering on the offensive. To give just a couple of examples:My elderly father cut his arm on a nail sticking out of a chair in his room. When I pointed this out to the owner, she replied: "It's good to know we bleed, isn't it?" When I reported that the air-conditioning in my room wasn't working properly, I was told very firmly that yes, it was. The kangaroo steak in the restaurant (which charges Sydney prices) was so overcooked, it was almost inedible. I wasn't going to say anything but the chef came out and asked me how the meal was. I said that, actually, the kangaroo was a little overcooked. He gave me a sarcastic reply, then walked over to the next table and joked to the guests about how he had put me in my place. The swimming pool was closed. It was also closed the last time I stayed in 2006. I'm not convinced it ever opens. The rooms have dirty paintwork, stained carpets, nasty cheap bedding and tiny bathrooms with stained plastic fittings. You would be hard put to find a more sublime location than Glen Helen Gorge, and you would be hard put to find worse accommodation, worse value for money or worse service. It's the only place to stay in the area so I guess the owners just feel they don't have to bother. Try not to stay there if at all possible.

This hotel is the only one (apart from campings) in the West Mc Donnell Ranges and National Park. You either have to return to Alice Springs (140 km) or continue on another few hundred kilometres to Watarrka National Park. So there is no choice... The price is steep for the quality offered, but as a monopoly and being far away from everything (increasing the cost of their supply as well), I guess the price is all right. We stayed with two adults and two children in one room, with ensuite bathroom. The place has beautiful surroundings (close to Glen Helen Gorge and Ormiston Gorge). The restaurant is attractive in its rustic setting and the food is good; we had dinner there.

Although the stay has been generally very enjoyable for me, prospective travellers should keep in mind that: - value-for-money is possibly much lower than in city locations due to the remoteness of the hotel, - some things can't immediately be fixed when they break (when I stayed the hot water was just a trickle due to a blocked pipe) - restaurant food can be fairly expensive for budget travellers, and when self-catering, BRING ALL YOUR OWN cutlery/crockery, since the dusty outdoor camp kitchen has almost no equipment, apart from an old pan or so. But the chef was very helpful with opening my cans ;-) - the range view rooms are generally quieter than the pool view rooms. The live bar entertainment was fun. I would stay again when I'm in the area, which - by itself - is unbeatable!

A quiet place and intimate room which faces to the rocks. Walking around in McDonell ranges was a dream (Ormiston Gorge), I would advise to take time to do it.

The staff has done all they can to please the guests. Also the singer on that Thursday night made our stay at Glen Helen unforgettable and one of the highlights of our 6 weeks journey through Australia.

The new owners are very friendly and helpful - the rooms are basic, the bathrooms even more basic, but that is not you should be looking for. Very good food and service in the restaurant. Ask for a room facing the mountain ans river.
