Far from the finished article
Swissotel Kolkata is aesthetically very pleasing. As a new hotel it is clean and the pool is a particular highlight.
However, they still have a long way to go with the quality of the service and need a major re-think of pricing which, in many respects, feels like a rip-off.
The staff are attentive but to the extent of pestering, eg continually asking if you want another drink before you have finished with the one you are drinking. The service is also extremely formulaic. No one will deal with an issue, be proactive or take responsibility. Instead there is a tendency to apologise and hope that an issue goes away rather than looking for solutions. We found this very frustrating.
The pricing needs some serious consideration. Room service portions are small but expensive. Despite listing several Indian wines on the menu they were all unavailable (and bar staff refused to get some for the other nights of our stay). The next cheapest alternative was Chilean Chardonnay at circa £65 per bottle. We booked a driver to do some sightseeing and we were charged an extortionate additional amount because the driver went a couple of kilometres over the initial rate. A driver to the airport (about 10 minutes away) is about 3 times more expensive than a taxi.
The breakfasts are good but the "cafe restaurant" is not of sufficient quality to be in a 5* hotel as the only option.
This could be a great hotel but there is a long way to go.
