The hotel is on JL Pantai Kuta,...
The hotel is on JL Pantai Kuta, the street that runs parallel to Kuta beach, a one way street that runs off Kuta square, so it is slow going in the traffic to get there - sometimes up to 20 minutes from Kuta Square (a distance of about 2km!). It is off JL Pantai Kuta along a dead end alley - about 200m off the road, so it is fairly quiet (all relative). The hotel is listed as a 3* but is very dated, built in the 1970s and in need of some renovation, a lick of paint etc. I would rate it at 1.5*
New management has just taken over (7 July) while I was there and changes are happening. New signs which indicate that it is now part of Holiday Villas - a Malaysian based company with Holiday villas and rooms around East Asia...not sure how they will manage to improve it to the holiday villas level, but they are working on it. Breakfast was included and it was the same standard fare everyday. Indonesian food - rice, noodles or potatoes, a meat or fish dish, a vegetable dish and fresh fruit. There was also the option of cornflakes and milk, and fried, poached or scrambled eggs and toast and bread rolls with an orange jam, tea, coffee and 2 types of juice. Due to the need for small offering temples in key locations, 4 rats live in the temple in the dining room, and there was no sign of any droppings anywhere else around the hotel that I saw. The dining room is open on one side and that leads out to the swimming pool. Breakfast goes from 7am-10am and at times, when big numbers of people were staying there service was poor, with staff quite inefficient and slow in meeting the demand e.g run out of clean cutlery, bread rolls - had to ask, rather than them noticing. They were always apologetic and brought you what you requested. There is room service 24hrs a day, be prepared to pay hefty prices though.
The swimming pool would have to be the hotels best feature - it was cleaned each day and they have a pool towel service and 7 lounge chairs beside the pool (good for sunbathing). The main swimming pool is really 3 pools - a little childrens pool (knee deep), a slightly deeper pool (~1m deep) and the main pool which joined on to it was ~2m deep and ~15m long. There is a second smaller pool through the courtyard that has a bar in it, for those so inclined.
The only issue with the swimming pool is that there are no signs saying "for the consideration of other hotel guests, no swimming before 7am, or after 10pm" - while I was there two large groups (100+) of families from Java on a tour with innumerable kids swam anytime from 5.30am - 11.30pm with no regard for their nosie levels!!! Kids will be kids, but a sign would be good so sleep is not delayed or interrupted.
Most rooms seem to have 1 double bed or 2 single beds, and so if you are 3-4 people in one room, expect 2 matresses on the floor for the extras to sleep on. Not sure about the villas.
Each room has a bathroom with a toilet, handbasin and a shower over the bathtub, and of an adequate size. There was an ever present odour of the waste pipe not a raw sewage smell, but a noticeable smell the whole time I was there. Sometimes my toilet wouldn't flush properly so I had to take the top off the cistern to make it work properly (I didn't tell management so I am not complaining). There was no plug for the handbasin.
You get a free complimentary drink, what they don't tell you is that it is a fruit juice. The actual hotel restaurant serves quite good food, but it is expensive. It was only busy when the tour groups were there, and when a conference group was staying there.
There are minibar fridges in the rooms - but it is expensive. They even tried to charge me for two bottles of Aqua (water) which the last people in my room had drunk and not me. Walk through the hotel and out into the back alley to get your drinks - there is a 24hr mini mart for all those little supplies (including beer) as well as numerous restaurants, where the price is cheaper.
The staff are all pleasant and nice and the hotel was clean enough - clean to Indonesian standards, but different to perhaps many European countries. I bought some disinfectant ("Sol") for my toilet and shower everyday.
There is a laundry service but it stopped on july 1st. I washed my clothes in the hand basin and strung a line up on my balcony (I had a first floor room).
My room was "cleaned" everyday, and fresh towels were brought, along with 2 small complimentary bottles of water - but at least twice I had to request my towels and water (and usually twice before anything turned up). Leaving a small tip on my pillow meant less phone calls! Cleaning meant sweeping the floor then mopping it with a wet towel.
There is a free shuttle bus every hour from 9am-12midday which takes you to Kuta Square if you are into shopping. There is a shop and a beauty spa, but again prices are way too high. You are better to go elsewhere for better value.
I am used to staying in very budget accomodation (backpacking) and so it was okay for me, but many other guests I spoke to (mostly European) were less than satisfied.
Overall it is okay - plain and clean accomodation, with a good location to Kuta Beach for surfing and swimming, watching the sunset, and a quick walk to the shops/restaurants behind. Be prepared for lots of Indonesian guests as it seems very popular with them!
Double check all your bills when you check out, and take an inventory of the minibar fridge when you arrive - so you don't get charged unnecessarily.
