The staff just stared at us when we arrived and let my Balinese friend unload the car. There were no smiles or greetings. We had to wait 90mins to check in and were offered nothing complimentary. We were not told where to get breakfast etc - had to ask. The staff were morose and unfriendly for most of our 2 day/night stay. The hotel driver pressured us to pay him cash for a journey in to Ubud instead of paying the reception so that he could take the money and that ruined our night out (despite the fact that we also had to wait at the rest for 40mins because they messed up when to pick us up).
The atmosphere wasn't relaxed or happy in the hotel. It was stuffy, snobby, and tense. The food however was amazing as were the views, and the pool. If you don't mind having a bad atmosphere, and can switch off to the view and eat lots you will have a great time here!! On the www it says that it is a few kms away from Ubud and it's about 10-15km. The driver told me 'We can't say where we are otherwise guests would not stay with us'. To get that view you need to be there though and it's worth it for that. The rooms were okay but I have had better, cleaner (cockroachs in our room), rooms in Kuta at 3 * hotels. When we left and went back to the Santika Beach in Tuban we had a welcome home letter from the manager, with a fruit platter, and more importantly big smiles from the staff about seeing us again. That is what I go to Bali for. Not pompous atmospheres with no light heartedness. I wouldn't go back to the Alila. Perhaps for lunch!
