We had stayed at the Maya in...
We had stayed at the Maya in July 2005 and loved it. This time we came having stayed at the Uma and we do not know whether that was the reason we were disappointed. The weather this August was particularly bad and it rained for 3 days while we were at the Maya which of course did not help as we could not take advantage of the beautiful grounds, play tennis or go on outings.
The hotel was full, which makes it quite different to two years ago when it was only 1/3 full. The client base seems to have shifted from Europeans (and Japanese) to Australians (and Japanese). Whether this is linked or not, I do not know, but we found the breakfast buffet less good than before. There was very little choice in cereals, fruits were not ripe. We ate in both restaurants and found they had reduced quantities. Whereas two years ago we would have a hearty breakfast and last until the evening meal, we had to eat at lunch time this year (as we had not had a satisfactory breakfast). Portions were small. If staying in Ubud, we would choose the Uma over the Maya. Also, the villas are nice (and expensive)but the bedrooms are quite plain.
