We had a somewhat mixed experience at Hotel Tjampuhan. On the plus side, the whole place has a fun, kitschy sort of 1940s tropical atmosphere, and the dining room and included breakfast were both very nice. The spa "grotto" is a hoot - way overdone, like the rest of the decor and landscaping. We enjoyed the pool, the mature vegetation and the many pathways meandering through the grounds. On the other hand, this place would be very trying to anyone who struggles with stairs. The room we were assigned was an "Agung" level room (according to the website). One thing that was not clear before we arrived was that rooms at this level do not have air conditioning. If this is important to you, you will want to get clear confirmation of your room's features before you book. Our first night there it was quite hot, and as the speed of the fan could not be increased, we found it hard to sleep. Later nights were better. Also, the staff will burn a mosquito coil in your room when doing early evening turndown service. We ended up appreciating that since some mosquitos were in fact present in the room. It wasn't until Day 3 that we noticed the small windows high above the shower that are completely open to the outside! (hence the mosquitos) We blocked these with towels and had no mosquitos thereafter. Finally, the hotel is probably about 15 minutes walk, a bit uphill, to the action in Ubud. Not that strenuous, but at mid-day it was brutally hot to make that trek in the full sun. Ubud itself is a great place to visit, however. We loved the Sacred Monkey Forest, the Ubud market (I hope you like to bargain hard) and the restaurants (esp. Terazzo - fantastic). Viva Bali.
