The Menjangin Resort is a fairly unique experience in Bali terms - no warungs! no shopping or transport touts and no crowds - Resort staff are very friendly and helpful,
we stayed in the lower cost Gazebo room at a small bedroom with a shared cold shower and toilet not far away across a boardwalk - all located in a mangrove on the water and placed well enough that you are as good as alone- a beach and some beautiful coral within metres - and snorkel heaven Menjangin Island (look it up, it is amazing) is close via local boatman.
the resort's one restaurant is nearly 2km away on roads so rough it is almost easier to walk than take the free shuttle (this comes on request) and if you do there's deer, monkeys and birdlife and trees (many labelled for species to see.
The restaurant is in a spectacular timber tower with views across the park and to stunning Volcano cones in nearby Java - the views are better than the food which is OK, but not exciting. Alternatively passable and generous evening meal by candlelight can be arranged on the ocean front.
After a few days I was tending to stir crazy, so we asked for a driver for an afternoon/evening and visited some impressive temples, drove through farmlands and ate locally - lamb - kambing is a specialty in sate, or as stew "gule'- very tasty - it was most enjoyable with our driver giving us lots of local information - it revived my spirits.
This isn't a cheap break, but it is a great unwind - away from TV, traffic, etc
