Eight days at Bunga Permai, Ubud, Bali
Bunga Permai is ouside of Ubud, about a 40-50,000 rupiah taxi ride, or a good hour of walking. If you want a quiet, peaceful place to stay as a base for day trips, this place is perfect. The rooms, buildings and gardens are classically Balinese and the views across the valley are great. At sunrise most days the volcanic peaks to the east are visible, but slowly cover in mist as the sun rises.
Breakfast is included in the room rate (about US$45 a day) and includes fruit, coffee/tea and a choice of 3 mains (pancakes, Nasi Goreng or bacon/eggs). The dining area is a Bali hut within the gardens with views of jungle to the east. The staff are vey friendly and speak English with varying degrees of understanding. The new Manager, Sam, is an excellent chef and speaks good English, Dutch and I think other languages.
The pool area is a great place to relax and a massage/spa area is set into the hillside one level further down from the sun lounges.
Our room was upstairs, with a large bedroom (four poster bed with mosquito netting) and a wall fan plus an excellent sized balcony with french doors . With the windows open at night there was no need for an airconditioner, although ground floor rooms are fitted with them. The bathroom was tired but adequate.
We thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere of the place, and Sam made us a couple of special 4 course dinners to give a break from the a la carte menu.
Overall, great place, great scenery and friendly people. Day trips with a car and a driver for 500,000 rupiah make anywhere accessible, and Ubud has attractions of its own as well.
I'd go back without hesitation.
