Don't stay here - it's a rip-off as well as dirty!
I arrived late at night from the plane - no lights to see my way to the room. Chinese people next door had the radio on full-blast at 11.30pm, but did turn it off. The room was small and musty and bathroom not clean, cupboard dusty. The walls paper thin and could hear every word in Chinese until 1.30 am when they finally went to sleep after my shouting at them to shut up. At 5am the birds belonging to the owner started to sing and chirp. At 8am I emerged from my room to find full-blast building going on not five yards from my verdandah - straight in front of me - work-men, women, hammering, angle grinding all going on exactly opposite. This is the biggest rip-off I have ever come across in Ubud. I do not know how Nick's homestay has a five star top of the list rating unless they are paying people to put positive comments on the website. I walked out of there at ten am and immediately got a lovely room at 100,000 rupiah cheaper, quiet, by the river, large verandah and my own kitchen, no mozzies and an enormous breakfast. And it is just off monkey forest road, close to the market, shops, library and restaurants etc. Nick's Homestay somehow has got a good reputation but there are hundreds of better cheaper places which are not on the internet which give you a much much better deal. This place was dreadful - a long way from the main centre of town, overpriced, dirty and noisy. I shall be telling everyone I can never to book in here, however good it seems to be on the internet - it is all lies. One good thing though, they did not worry about my leaving - I paid up for the night, but they did not give me a discount for the inconvenience of the noise and building work. I am disgusted that this place is promoted on all the booking websites.
