I have visited Bali several times and stayed in many hotels and guest houses. In this respect the accommodation at Grandma's was a one-off experience. When my friend and I arrived there was some confusion with the booking, the clerk suggested we'd booked a double room instead of the twin-share as stipulated in the emailed confirmation. This in itself was potentially embarrassing.
While Grandma's was clean, the room was quite small with bed crammed up against the wall. Only 1 pillow was provided and no top sheet. The quilt was grubby and clearly had not been laundered. The bath towels were hardly bigger than a face-washer and there were no glasses for cleaning teeth - we had to get a couple of plastic cups from the adjoining restaurant. No tissues were provided, no minibar or fridge (thereby necessitating having to drink warm bottled water), no tea/coffee-making facilities, no breakfast included - the very first time I've encountered this in all the places I've ever stayed at in Bali. The reception staff feigned a lack of understanding or concern when we raised these issues. Smiling but unhelpful. The swimming pool was undersized and situated right next to the diners in the restaurant so we did not avail ourselves of that facility. The hotel clearly was unprepared for the storm that struck on the night of March 17 and our room, along with several others along the corridor, was flooded with water. The cane awnings at the balcony flapped and banged in the wind all night and robbed us of sleep. The security safe was not attached to the actual room and therefore could quite easily be removed from the room.
I've had broad experience of accommodation throughout Asia and Grandma's fell far short of my expectations given the cost factor and service provided. Overall Grandma's is little more than a glorified youth hostel and not only will I not recommend Grandmas or AsiaRooms to anyone visiting Bali but I'll share my critique with everyone I know in Singapore and Australia.
