Excellent location
Location was key to our decision for choice of hotel. My friend is a return traveller n this is her 3rd stay at Hills Batam (previously Puri Grdn). It's only a road away (less than 5minutes walk) to Nagoya Shopping Centre n streets of affordable spas n local delicacies. I have encountered scarier traffic (think Ho Chi Minh or Shanghai) so crossing the busy road in front of hotel is not an issue. Strong n reliable wifi in lobby with occasional signal in our room (we stay lvl 3). Favourite international tv channels in room (HBO, Foxcrime n programmes from china n taiwan etc) keep us occupied on rainy days. Mini fridge to store the leftover drinks bought from supermarket. In-room service menu priced in SGD and after calculations, not too unreasonable to solve hunger pangs late at night, though not sure if the price tag would make sense to guests from other countries. We didn't place an order so can't comment on room service food quality. Overall, service staffs are great, even with limited English, they try to be helpful and are always smiling (despite us looking frustrated/impatient at times).
Downsides: Hungry mosquitoes would attack you in the lobby (I have helped to exterminate a few during our stay.) Hotel breakfast variety very limited and hygiene is an issue with occasional flies. Bedsheets n towels in our twin room have one or two small slight stains if you squint hard enough, otherwise we could live with it. Bathtub diesn't appear well maintained n bathtub curtains appear dirty so we used the shower instead. Traffic noise may disrupt sleep quality esp late in the night n wee hours of morning. This is a family-oriented hotel so you get crying babies during breakfast and screaming kids running along corridor as early as 5am (not sure why?!) so not ideal if you are looking for a peaceful getaway.
Great staff but otherwise shabby
When I arrived at the hotel, there was no record of my AsiaRooms booking, which seems to have happened to other users, too. Maybe AsiaRooms needs to improve.
The staff were terrific. The room service menu is very extensive and reasonably priced. The hotel is located directly across the road from Nagoya Hill shopping mall. It is about a 10-15 minute walk to the Nagoya Entertainment District.
The room smelt strongly of cigarette smoke. The airconditioner was loud with an apparent mechanical fault. Stains and dust throughout the room. The bathroom, like the rest of the room, was rundown. No safe in the room.
For the same price or possibly slightly less, you could get a room at the four-star nearby hotel, which is superior to The Hills in every way except for room service menu! Goodway is a 10 minute walk to Nagoya Hill shopping mall and a 2 minute walk to the Entertainment District.
Overall, The Hills is a poor hotel that offers terrible value for money. That's a shame because the staff are as good as any other hotel's staff in Batam.

Batam Hills
Not a very good place to stay if you want a good holiday. The hotel seems quite old and the bathtub were very dirty and it looked likes it going to crack anytime when we took shower.
