Batu Karang hotel is on Nusa Lembongan,...
Batu Karang hotel is on Nusa Lembongan, an island just off the south east coast of Bali. You have to get the boat from Sanur beach (near the Bali Beach Hotel) which is in the northern part of Sanur. We recommend you contact the hotel in advance to organise your boat transfer - the service they use is Scoot - this will ensure that there is someone to take your luggage to the resort on arrival. Unfortunately we didn't do this and struggled with our heavy suitcases about half a mile from the boat drop-off point to the hotel. However the hotel manager was very apologetic and the cold towel and welcome drink were most appreciated! The staff at Batu Karang are super friendly and helpful - as indeed are all the Balinese people. They are very chatty and most can speak reasonable English. We were totally impressed with our villa. It was large, luxurious and we had a lovely outside bath and shower which I didn't want to get out of. Our balcony looked out over the sea, as did every balcony in the resort. The bed was really comfortable and had a mosquito net. There are three swimming pools - one is quite public and the other two are more private with one specially for doing lengths. The restaurant serves excellent food, which is just as well because the other eateries in the area leave a lot to be desired. It's a very quiet hotel and mainly couples - young and old - so don't expect a lively bar in the evening. A holiday at Batu Karang is purely about the relaxation and peace.

I was only half kidding went I sent an e-mail home saying, “Found paradise, sell the house, send the dogs!” The island is a wonderful departure from the hustle and bustle of Denpasar. Every morning I woke up and took a picture from the view on the balcony of our room. Every morning it was beautiful and different than the morning before. The hotel, well, what can I say. From our welcoming drink to Julie’s good-bye hug, these people cared. We were not treated as guests of the establishment, but as a guest of Troy and his staff. They were there each morning to assist us in any excursions we wanted to do, offer suggestions if we desired and at the end of the day, they really wanted to know how the day was. We wanted to know about the village and the culture, and they were more than happy to share. The staff was impeccable. Within a day, they knew how we drank our coffee, our names and truly made us feel as honored and special guests. The people are truly generous and giving. You can buy souvenirs, but you won’t be aggressively pursued like you will in Denpasar. The rooms. The view. From the outdoor bathtubs with a view, to the view from the balcony there is not a more beautiful sight. Whether it was sunrise and the gentle fog lifting over the village, with shades of pink and blue reflecting on the water, or during the night when they harvested the seaweed by lantern and moonlight. Check out the surf on playgrounds, shipwreck, lacerations or razors all from your balcony, if the surf's not up, it's ok, there is always a tour of the island or some of the best snorkeling anywhere! It’s island time. Sit back, relax and enjoy the surfing and the beautiful snorkeling.
