Hotel with Great Potential
First of all, my wife and I did have a great experience at the Grand Swiss Belhotel. It has great potential of becoming an international five star hotel, but by international standards, I would give it a 4 star. I say, however, that it has the potential of being an international five star because some of the room amenities and the overall aesthetics of the hotel are really luxurious and beautiful. I can imagine what the place was like when it first opened, when it may in fact been an international 5 star. The question is whether they can maintain the rooms in such condition.
The room we were assigned had a beautiful view of the city and the river village bordering the hotel --- a corner unit. The floor to ceiling picture windows provided us an impressive view and the bathroom felt very luxurious with its recessed lighting, marble fixtures, etc. One thing that people need to consider is the stage of development that a city ilike Medan s in. Medan is still developing, so a hotel like this is truly a local 5 star hotel. Drawbacks will be the plumbing system in the bathrooms. As lovely as the bathroom is, there is a certain displeasing odor that comes up from the vents. I've seen this in some of the best hotels in Asia as well. While the fixtures, linens, curtains and furniture are of good quality, some of it could use a sprucing up.
I felt that the grand majority of the staff made an effort to please their guests. This included housekeeping, food and beverage staff at the cafe and The Edge as well as The View Lounge. Appreciate your kindness extended.
I would recommend this hotel as one of Medan's finest, reminding my fellow travelers that Medan is still a developing city and that they will continue to improve as the overall conditions in this city improve.

Decent for money paid.
Probably one of top 3 hotels in Medan. Was decently furnished and clean. My only grouse is that the walls of the hotel room are rather thin and you can hear almost all sounds made by people along the corridors. the guests staying at this hotel tend to be natives and they are a very rowdy bunch with not much social grace and hence, you will hear shouts and loud talk even after midnight.
Excellent Guest Relations
I arrived in Medan after a rugged backpacking tour around Sumatra, and wanted nothing more than a hot bath, some good food and a pleasant night's rest. Upon arrival, the girls at reception were more than accommodating to my every need. They told me about an excellent Indian restaurant just around the corner from the hotel, and one of them took me to the market to buy local coffee in the morning. They made what was expected to be a quick stopover in Medan, an awesome experience that I'm looking forward to going back and re-living!

It is not often that I add any significant comment to a hotel review, but after a stay at the Swiss Bel-hotel, I considered it worthy of more than clicking a few stars.

Very courteous staff did their best to help despite limited English. Overall the hotel was good but be warned that the rooftop bar / restaurant wasn't finished / existent when I visited. Shame because the views would have been fantastic!
Easily the best hotel in Medan at...
Easily the best hotel in Medan at present. Spent 5 nites there in Nov'08. Hotel's very new & not all facilities are fully operational - only the lobby lounge & the coffeehouse.
The service is excellent! Will strongly recommend this hotel to all who're visitng Medan. Can be pricey though...
