I would have rated Istana Batik higher...
I would have rated Istana Batik higher if not for two issues, of which a recent policy of only accepting credit cards with chip proved to be a major problem. This policy which according to staff was only implemented a month ago and not at any time disclosed to this reviewer prior to check out, made a most restful and pleasant stay, neither restful or pleasant. If non acceptable of credit card as method of payment is made clear at the onset, misunderstandings and annoyances can be avoided. This ill advised policy in effect forces the guest to inconvenience his or herself by either making a ATM withdrawal and or paying with cash. This is not acceptable, because it removes the option of personal choice from the guest and places it on the management where it does not belong. I urge management to either change this policy, or if that is not possible to make it clear both online and by all methods of contact this policy. As most credit cards issued around the world do not have a chip, this in effect forces the guest to fork out cash when he or she does not want to.
The second issue is related to Istana Batik's wireless system which on both occasions that the reviewer stayed at Istana Batik was prone to going off line and quite slow at that.
I still consider Istana Batik good value for the money, with decent facilities, an unenviable location and a lovely internal courtyard/restaurant with a small but delicious pool that fronts the forward rooms. Staff is friendly, anxious to please, although English comprehension is generally poor. Rooms are rather close to each other, smallish, quite suitable for families, but probably not for amorous and noisy couples. With its carved surfaces and Javanese objets d'art in its public spaces, it has quite a bit of charm.
I have a feeling that someone in management arbitrarily decided that the hotel was either short of cash flow or needed a bad door means of forcing guests to pay with cash even though they are officially set up for credit card payment.
