Eugenio di Beauharnis dealt with its construction following orders from Napoleon Bonaparte, from 1811 to 1813. What spur the building of this fortress was the need to prevent mobs from the English fleets braking the continental block, and managing to land in Portonovo to take on the excellent drinking water gushing out from the depths of the mountain.
The fortress is situated in a beautiful picturesque position between the green of the woods and the blue of the sea in the heart of the Conero Riviera and is today a hotel with a reputed restaurant in its center building, which was originally the fortress’ armory. The rooms and suites are all at ground level located in the surrounding parametric building, former soldier barracks.
The Hotel Fortino Napoleonico is right in front of the water, the sea waves can beat against it in high tide.
