Fair value from Westin brand
The Westin Miyako is showing its age, especially its bathroom facilities. There was also a rather unpleasant smell from the detergent used. Some of the cost-cutting measures were taken to a slight extreme, with only 2 English-language TV channels offered and 1 complimentary bottle of mineral water for 2 pax, in a Deluxe room.
However, the staff always had a smile on their faces, and the service of its staff was generally very high except that check-in took longer than expected (almost 15 min).

Shortchanged
The room I reserved was not held for me.Instead of a Deluxe room (34-38 sq.m)I was given a standard room despite paying another 5000 yen per night for access to the Executive Lounge.
It was only after some hassle that I was given the room I booked for but it was a smoking room.
The staff who checked me in initially was unhelpful and unfriendly.Although all other staff made us feel welcome,the room saga made our stay unpleasant.
I have been a SPG member for so many years and this is the first time I encountered such a bad experience.I will certainly not return to this hotel

Excellent Hotel
Luxury hotel. Position is about 20 minutes out of the city but the complimentary bus was very good. The staff were very helpful. Our room was on the top floor and had a lovely view across the city. I couldn't find a fault with our stay. The restaurant was expensive to eat in, but that is always the case in this kind of hotel.
The free shuttle from the train station...
The free shuttle from the train station makes it very easy to stay here. It's only a few minute walk from one of the best temples I've seen on my entire trip to Japan (Nanzen-ji). I did a lot of walking around the town too. Some other friends recommended "K's" but I couldn't figure out where it was relative to the rest of the city, and 2 other people I know had stayed at the Miyake, so figured I couldn't go wrong.
Room was pretty standard. Nothing special. Good buffet breakfast, but there was no outside light, and the room lighting was really bad for trying to read the morning paper.
Reception and concierge services were very good/helpful.

People warned us that it was located...
People warned us that it was located out of the way but it is directly beside a subway stop, and it has a great shuttle service to the train station and the downtown. It is well situated in the eastern area of Kyoto with several key attractions close by. It has a lovely Japanese garden and is a short walk to the Philosopher's Way. The rooms are very spacious and well appointed in every way. My only criticism of the hotel was the excessive charge for internet service. The breakfast service was excellent, and the staff attentive.

Hotel was a bit out of the way to most attractions. The free shuttle was good, but it ended too early at 5.45pm so we had to walk back to the hotel from Gion, about 20 minutes with kids. The free use of the pool and gym was a plus.

Room was fairly small but clean. Location is not too good, shuttle ride was a bit too far.
A pretty far walk to the shrine and shopping area. Need to take the subway. And from Kyoto station is not straight forward, requiring to switch lines.

Except for lack of shuttle to the moto-hakone to have cheaper options to dinner. Stuck in hotel and pricey restaurant prices and so-so buffet dinner.
Free shuttle from Odawara Station is very good.
Great hotel, don't be put off by...
Great hotel, don't be put off by the outward appearance, which is a little bland, the inside makes up for it. Warm friendly staff and great rooms. Would recommend.
