Hotel Monterey Kyoto exceeded our expectations from check-in to check-out. The staff, amenities, location and decor were all exceptional. I would recommend this hotel to anyone, and stay here again.

Great location just a minute walk to the nearest subway station and just a block away from the bustling shopping Shijo street. Typically clean, friendly and high standard of Japan. Not for budget travellers, but I was there with work. Room was fine, bed v comformtable! Would recommend.

The Monterey Hotel was one of the best places we stayed at, it was very close to the subway and the location was fantastic, the customer service was outstanding, staff were very friendly and approachable, the hotel was extremely tidy and clean, room size was larger than expected. We would definitely come back again and would recommend people to stay here.

Quite original and very pleasant hotel, located in the centre of Kyoto, close to imperial palace and most transports (subway & buses). Very easy access from Kyoto JR station.
The hotel is extremely stylish and, despite the important number of rooms, looks like a "boutique hotel". The staff is numerous (including a concierge service), qualified (including quite a good english) and extremely nice and concerned with customers' satisfaction. Considering the price (around 110 € / night for us) it is an excellent choice I strongly recommend...

An excellent hotel. The room was immaculately clean and very tastefully decorated. A few minor points though that would have earned it a higher rating; the pillows were a bit hard - they felt as though they were full of straw or a similar material. Also there was onoly one per bed. The cable TV had only one channel in English; an English movie channel would be good for down time after all the sight seeing in Kyoto. Location wise, it was in a good area with the only negative being that there didn't seem to be any buses passing the hotel which meant that all the sightseeing involved a good five plus minutes walk to the appropriate bus stop. As ever in Japan, the staff were extremely helpful and overall, the stay was very pleasant and I would be very happy to stay in the hotel again in the future.

My husband and I stayed at the Monterey 4 nights in April 2009 and we were completely satisfied.
The hotel is perfectly situated in Downtown Kyoto and easy to find (from Kyoto Station, take the subway till Karasuma Oike - exit 6. When you go out of the subway station, turn right and you'll find the hotel).We did not eat breakfast at the hotel as there is a Starbucks just accross the street(next to a Family Mart).
Rooms are a bit small for two people with two big suitcases but it is really the only thing that I can complaint about. And rooms in Japan are not big anyway...I would really recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Kyoto.

The main criticism involves the room size; we were also placed in a smoking room despite a request to the contrary. For the rest, it's fine and well situated.

My stay at the Monterey Hotel Kyoto was fantastic. The hotel is beautiful, the service is first class and the location is excellent. The room was beautifully appointed, breakfast was filling and tasty with a good variety of food. The hotel also had internet on the ground floor for much better value than the nearby Kinkos. Transport (bus and trains) were within a few minutes walk and the downtown shopping district was also within walking distance. The spa was also very luxurious. While the Monterey is a little expensive, you certainly get what you pay for and I would recommend the Monterey Hotel MKyoto to anyone.
