A friend of mine recommended Hotel Hanamiya...
A friend of mine recommended Hotel Hanamiya to me as he had stayed there on occasions when he was in Tokyo.
The hotel is about 10 minutes walk from the JR Ikebukuro station West Exit. It can be a bit of a challenge to locate for first timers to Tokyo as it is at the end of a small alley away from the main street.
Once located, the entrance to the hotel is not obvious as it looks like a fire exit door at the first glance. The "front desk" is a small room with a window and the payment has to be settled upon check-in.
The room is small as with all business hotels in Tokyo and taking a shower in the miniature toilet cum bathing area can be daunting for anyone who is above 175cm in height. The same can be said about the sole passenger lift in the building which can fit only 4 persons and has a lifing capacity of only 500kg. Luckily, the hotel is only 4 storeys tall and climbing stairs is always an option if the lift fails.
Having said that, the shortcomings of the hotel can be overlooked if one is looking for a cheap accomodation as, in reality, the hotel is only used for the night's rest and then to be out and about as soon as the sun rises.
Pros: The hotel is good for seasoned travellers to Tokyo as it offers a cheap accomodation and is quite assessable from the JR station for anyone who is familiar with the streets of Tokyo. I'll personally recommend this hotel for seasoned travellers to Tokyo who wants a cheap accomodation so that they can spend their hard earned cash on other indulgences in the land of the rising sun.
Cons: The hotel can be a challenge to locate for first timers to Tokyo and if one is particular about the appearance of the hotel that one stays in, this one will never make the cut. Everything in the hotel can be sumed up using one word... small.
