We stayed at the Royal Mulu Resort...
We stayed at the Royal Mulu Resort over a couple nights in February 2008. The 'Royal' title seemed misplaced at first upon 'shuttle' pickup from the Airport on the back tray of a covered utility vehicle. First sight of the resort is everything you would expect in the forest environment, stilted huts with long boradwalks set amidst overhead rainforest. There are plenty of people 'working' at the resort, ie standing around. Me, being new to the resort, and having asked the staple questions on what activities are available nearby and how far ar the local shops and god forbid - where is the park HQ. hese were greeted by blank stares and shruggs. That, and the fact food, activities and basic internet access RM32 an hour!!!! are all exorbidant and tours offered by the resorts tour guides are far in excess of an equal tour offered by the guides at Mulu NAtional Park. -- All in all, Great location-- and would have been so much more an enjoyable experience had the resort been managed half competantly.

The room was large and lovely and the breakfasts were great. However, a la carte dishes in the restaurant were way too expensive and so we ate lunch and dinner at the cafe at park HQ. Also the resort's tours were much more expensive than those offered at park HQ. It would probably be OK if you got a resort package that included all meals and tours.

This being the only resort/hotel next to...
This being the only resort/hotel next to the Gunung Mulu National Park, there is not much choice here. The resort has a small pool. However, other than the pool, there are charges for all other activities including the pool table. Hence, please plan your trip as there are really not much to do. If you are not going to do any adventure caving, a 3-4 day stop will allow you to cover the sights in the National Park at a leisurely pace. The deluxe room is nice and big. However, cleaniness is a bit lacking at cobwebs can be seen at the corners of the room and the balcony. Food is also expensive at the resort, so it will be better to eat at the park or at the cafe just outside the park. As for the tour for the park, it is a lot cheaper to book at the park itself. And transportation between the park and the resort has be to arrange at the resort for RM$3 per pax each way.

We had a wonderful stay at the Royal Mulu. The service was exceptional: staff was very friendly, ever smiling, and very attentive. We had a problem with our air-con in our room and we told the front desk. Within 15 mins, an mainenance man arrived and worked for an hour and fixed it. The room and bathroom are very spacious. The all-you-can-eat buffet dinner was not bad and have enough variety for various palates. The wait staff was very attentive without being hoovering. I will certainly stay there again.
