The exterior(pools, cafes) of the resort seems to be in better condtion than interior(room). The room seems to be old in times as the bathtub was yellowish but to be fair, it is clean.
The housekeeping took very long. At 3pm, our room was still not make up. We have to work around the timing of the housekeeping which can be fustrating.
The location of the hotel is good as opp is McDonalds and KFC. There is a night market outside the hotel that leads all the way to holiday inn hotel. There is a food centre which sells lots of cheap local food in the evening (turn right at the hotel entrance).
The adventure zone is very good. My kids love it and the pricing is very reasonable too.
Only downside is the kids club which i do not recommend parents to drop their kids there alone as there is only 1 caregiver and during the little chef session, the caregiver took 30mins to return, leaving the kids all alone. I couldn't imagine what will happen if i wasn't there. A lady was so fustrated that she took her daughter and left the area.
The shuttle bus services should be made more frequently as there is once where it was full and we had to take a cab down which is costly. Cabs there do not go by meter.
Just a trip to toy museum took us RM60 for a family of 4, RM40 for two way cab ride and it took us a mere 30 mins before we are out of the place. Pathetic!
For couples, i do not recommend this as the area more for family and can be very noisy.

Deluxe Room Package
Very good value for money package for the family. Comes with free entrance to Kids Adventure zone, 1 complimentary dinner and 1 way free shuttle. The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. I love the special check-in area with sofas and TV for the kids while check-in is on-going. Room was very nice and I asked for an extra bed which was delivered to us rather promptly after we check-in to our room. Room service is done twice a day where a bed turn over is done in the evening. This is a nice gesture! The only issue was the breakfast at Garden Cafe was too crowded in the morning and we had to wait outside for room number to be called. This took a while and delayed our plans for the day a little. Overall, our 3 nights stay has been very pleasant and experience has been good. Will definitely return to stay for a holiday in the future!
Good family hotel
I stayed in Golden Sands many times since 15 years ago, still find the resort is well managed, one of the best around in Penang, family friendly, and would visit again.
A Family-Friendly Resort
We enjoyed our stay at the resort, especially the kids. The Adventure Zone, swimming pools and the cool lounge were really great and kept them occupied and happy! We appreciate the thoughtful gesture of the hotel which was upgrading our room to a deluxe one and providing us with an extra bed (without us asking for it). This made it a more comfortable stay for our family of four. The only unpleasant thing we encountered was a choked and flooded bathroom on the first night, but we managed to rectify it ourselves. If not for this, our stay here would be almost perfect!
Booked seafacing room, but it really mean seafacing and is not guarantee seaview. Initially, i was given a room on level 1 which is seafacing and the view .... nice tropical coconut tree. A call to front desk, they are kind and helpful enough to change to a room on a higher floor with a seaview which definitely has make my day. In general, it is a pleaseant experience, there are also shops, night market and resturants near the hotel.
meet the needs
from the time we arrived the staff were most friendly and helpful. we went as a a family (3 couple 1 baby) and when we realised that my daughter (with the baby) had an adjoining room we asked if we could be moved into it when available - the immmediatly blocked it and moved us into it the next day. The Buffet breakfast was great, pool area great and the ability to use facilities at other Shangra la hotel and bill back to our room was fantastic.

Easy place to stay with young kids, great facilities, serviced room, excellent breakfast. Night Market easy access if you can drag the kids out ofthe pool. Can catch shuttle or local bus to and from Georgetown.

My review is a couple of months late since we have been occupied with moving house. My husband and I stayed with my 10 yr old son and 4yr old daughter at this hotel for a total of 9 nights. We had stayed at the Park Royal the year before and even though we loved the facilities we did not find their staff to be very welcoming and customer friendly. We were attracted to the Shangri La due to all the great reviews it was getting for customer care and friendliness. We found all this to be true and more so from the moment we arrived. We were made to feel like we were coming home and not guests from the staff at the front desk to the gardeners and life guards. Everyone went out of their way to make our holiday enjoyable and make the kids feel special. All our requests were seen to promptly and with a smile. Ame at the check in reception constantly make sure we were well taken care of and she is a real asset to this hotel. It seems as if management go out of their way to make their staff happy and guests definitely benefit from this. Breakfast was varied and of a very good standard and in the 9 days we were there I was not bored of the spread at all. Food was also well presented and our table was constantly being cleared in an unobtrusive manner. Penang is a great low key family vacation destination, this being our 4th visit and we will definitely be back.
