I stayed there for 2 nights, well the Hotel is actually ok for the price, the staff is very friendly, special Miss Polly from the reception, if u need any help try to talk to her, the hotel is a business hotel in my opinion, the rooms are ok, except the aircon, to warm in the room, and not possible to adjust individual, also no cable tv, only 2 or 3 malaysian stations, the location kind of funny, 100 meters a way 2 shopping centers, no pub no restaurant no nothing at all around there, and the area looks very old, all the houses around need probably some paint to light up the atmosphere, well exspect a 3 star hotel in a 2 star location, well all in all good value for the money, if there would be a pub around or in the hotel, i would stay again!
A poor example of a Grand Continental...
A poor example of a Grand Continental Hotel that is well past it's prime. The room are just acceptable but are well worn, the shower/tiolet areas in need of total refurbishment. The restaurant at breakfast has a restricted choice and is of a difficult layout that makes dining akward. The staff are short of smiles and tend to appear busy only when you approach them. The price is good but I suppose you get what you pay for, in future I'll choose to pay a little more and expect a lot more for my money.

Service is OK. Breakfast is good. Although I requested that I get the non-smoking room, I got the smoking room instead. The room was dirty due to trace of tar here and there. Surprisingly, the air appears to be OK with no noticeable burned cigarette smell. The location is definitely convenient. I may consider staying at the Grand Continental hotel again next time around.
Well...the first room we had was damp...
Well...the first room we had was damp and mouldy. The carpet outside the bathroom was wet so we asked to change room, which Reception kindly helped us to do. Our second room was really no different.
The pool has a good location on the roof but the water quality was poor. The pool was also small by modern standards.
The buffet breakfast was the worst we have had of any hotel in Asia, and we have stayed in many 3 to 5 star hotels in cities in the region with buffet breakfasts. The buffet was so bad we did not want to use our 2nd breakfast coupon. We only did so on our last morning because it was quicker than leaving the hotel to eat locally when we had to catch a taxi to the airport.
The Grand Continental Hotel Penang generally has the feel of a hotel that was once ok, probably when it first opened, but which has been allowed to decay ever since. We couldn't honestly recommend this hotel to anyone, especially as there are many fine hotels to choose from in Georgetown and at Batu Fehrengi.
The best aspect of this hotel is probably its location. It is in an light-industrial part of Georgetown but which is close to the centre of the city. For travellers seeking to see the typical life of Penang, and not the the more tourist-oriented beach areas out of town, its a good location. It is also close to some quite ok local cafes and restaurants at which to eat.
Its sad to criticise the Grand Continental Hotel Penang this way because most staff did really try to offer good service. Its just that the building is so poor.
Penang is a great place to visit but we recommend travellers stay somewhere other than the Grand Continental!

Well thanks for the arrangement. However the room was too big. And also altenate rooms was also available. The dissapointing thing was the 2 family rooms was in 2 different floors, since we have to break into ladies and men it was difficult to get change because we share one lugguge we have to go up and down for all purpose which was very troublesom. The in house tv was terrible i miss the news very much.I think occupancy of the rooms should be base on reality than the hotel policies.

This hotel was situated in a very good position. Komtar shopping center was close and also the other tourist attractions. The hotel was old and the rooms had seen their better days. Breakfast was good in Malaysian standard. Remember to bargain very hard with prices of local transportations (Taxis). I would stay in this hotel again.
