Heritage
This hotel is not for you if you want the sort of trappings that a normal 4* or 5* hotel provides, like a well stocked mini-bar, pool,spa or funky restaurant and bar. On the other hand, if you are passionate about heritage buildings and the history which surrounds them this is about as good as it gets. The staff are very knowledgable about the history of the building and convey that knowledge with a passion. They obviously love this building, and who could blame them. The tour guides are also very knowledgable and engaging. I travelled as a solo traveller and loved my stay. The assistant manager, Mr Poh, was very helpful as was the rest of the staff. You need to put up with a few inconveniences, ( the bathroom is fairly basic and the food court next door is noisy) but for the opportunity to stay here it is a small price to pay. Breakfast is great for a westerner (eggs, cereal or toast) and is plentiful. Thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Would recommend a room on the top floor as there is no noise insulation between the top room floor and the bottom room ceiling - they are the same, but that's is how they were built.
Stay in piece of history
Stepping into the mansion is like stepping back into history.
It is a stunning villa, a short walk to the coast and right next to entertainment streets and restaurants.

When staying here, also make sure you visit Suffolk House, and pop into the Eastern and Oriental Hotel for a cocktail, to complete your trip into history.

It isa museum
You have to understand that this accommodation is part of a museum and expect it to be a museum. Everything looks old except the bathroom. The most beautiful part of the mansion is the Central Courtyard where you can enjoy while eating your breakfast or reading a book. It is very homely and comfortable.
Stunning mansion
This was by far the best accommodation I have stayed in during my many travels through Asia. The history of this mansion adds to it's beauty and serenity. The staff are friendly and personable and the location means you see all the best areas of Georgetown. I would never stay anywhere else in Penang!
Fascinating stay
We recently had a stay at Cheong Fat Tze Mansion and it is a remarkable place. Great photo opportunities and was like being back in time. Convenient spot in Georgetown and good food available in the night market next door. Staff very helpful and friendly. The room was clean and had the total ambience of the era. I would recommend it if you are interested in something different.

Very beautiful place. So special and different from other places I have stayed. If I ever go back to Georgetown I would stay there again, without a doubt!
Did the tour of the house as well, highly recommend it, you get a much better idea of all the hidden gems. The guide that day, Pat, was very entertaining and knowledgeable.
The bathroom might not be the most modern but it worked fine, and the room itself more than made up for it.
Easy walk to hawker stalls and everything you need.
Took so many photos of CFTM, which you are only allowed to do if you stay there.
This is not a bad place for...
This is not a bad place for vintage romantists who wants to get away from the cookie-cutter hotels. I understand the reason why there is no tv but maybe, a dvd machine with some movies like Indochine ( that was shot at the mansion ) or something similar that has to do with colonial Malaya would be very informative and entertaining.
I also would prefer better towels and more in each room as we found ourselves showering a few times a day. We love the staff as they were friendly and stayed out of our way. Love the tour given by Eric Fam. He does a swell job!
The worst drawback is the loud live music from the Red Garden restaurant as the noise did not ceased until 1 am!
But, I would go back to stay for the nostalgia. Maybe.
