The service at the George was absolutely fabulous! And dinner at the restaurant Pescatore was wonderful (although it was a little confusing how to get there). Every dish was not only delicious but also beautifully presented. Any one who seeks for some private and quiet accommodation with good service would definitely love to stay here!

The George is a wonderful hotel. The room, the service as well as the location were excellent. However, we had a very bad experience in their restaurant Il Pescatore. The entree (starter) portions were abysmally small- 1 ravioli for the ricotta ravioli entree and 6 small bay scallops for the scallop entree. After waiting for 1.5 hours, our main courses did not arrive, and the waiter avoided us after telling us that there was a private party, so the kitchen staff was backlogged. By this point we had finished our wine, which we had to pour ourselves. We called over the waiter and asked for our bill. The head waiter came over and apologized and said that our mains would 'probably be coming sometime soon'. He gave us the bill which was 162 New Zealand dollars for a bottle of wine and two tiny starters. There was no offer of any sort to compensate us for our bad experience. Travelers should be warned to stay away from this restaurant as the prices are ridiculously high for the tiny portions and the service appears to be totally uncaring. In fairness, we had an excellent breakfast next morning in the regular restaurant on the main floor.

Very good stay again, our second time and no fault could be found. Staff very attentive, room and restaurant excellent, will stay again when in Christchurch.

Despite asking whether we could have a...
Despite asking whether we could have a quieter room, the only alternative offered was another one close to the lift and lobby. The room we retained was fine except that at 07.25 the gardeners started clipping a hedge and sweeping about 1 foot from our room ;all the while talking noisily.
Despite reporting and remonstrating with Reception about this nothing was done,and the noise continued.
After complaining again and being made to wait for some 15 minutes for an answer, we were eventually awarded a complimentary breakfast in compensation.
The whole affair was not handled very well and I was distinctly underwhelmed by the hotels reaction.Not what I expected from a top class hotel.
Room itself was fine and the Concierge couldn't have been more helpful.

This hotel was of a very high standard with excellent services. It is however, a good 10 minute walk to the town area with all the various activities and is on a very busy main road.
