Aoturoa (pronounced Ow-tu-roa) means World of Light and is a privately owned luxury retreat, nestled on 50 acres of river flat in the valley between Queenstown and Lake Wanaka on the banks of New Zealand’s 2nd largest river, the Clutha. Aoturoa is a modern two-story villa built for comfort and durability. With 360 degree mountain views, the magnificent vistas are pictured from every room. Aoturoa offers more than accommodation with acres to explore, trout & salmon to fish for, and barely a building in sight – a perfect place to unwind.

Jon and Lesley, your hosts, are New Zealanders who have lived overseas & travelled extensively. They built Aoturoa in 2002 and love living here It’s a place of extraordinary contrasts in a stimulating landscape. So much to explore. A photographer’s dream.

Aoturoa is architecturally designed in the style of accommodation your hosts Jon & Lesley enjoy staying in when they travel. A warm, friendly, casual, comfortable country retreat in splendid isolation - and close to all the regions attractions. It’s so easy to relax here. Also on offer are 2 guest lounges with open fireplaces, extensive book & DVD libraries and free internet. The four deluxe guest bedrooms are spacious and beautifully furnished with private ensuites. The luxurious deep French bathtubs offer the perfect relaxation at the end of the day and you can pamper yourself with an infusion of Passionfruit and Echinacea or Fig and Licorice bath salts. All bedrooms have breathtaking mountain views. They include super king size beds with crisp sheets, down quilts and pillows, satellite TV & DVD player.

The garden design is strong and provides a link to the powerful Clutha Valley landscape and mountain panorama. The garden is a mixture of exotics and natives. Fruit and vegetables are organically grown. The stone fruit & berry orchard is a delight in January/February and guests are welcome to help themselves to tree ripened fruit. The Olive Grove supplies Aoturoa with its own oil & olives and a Hazelnut Grove has been planted as a future commercial crop.

Aoturoa has a strong focus on the regions outstanding food & wine. It is an ideal base to experience the internationally renowned vineyards with cellar door wine tasting.

Lake Wanaka township is a short 15 minute drive away and fun for boutique shopping, visiting great cafes, restaurants, bars & art galleries or treating yourself to a spa treatment. With Mt Aspiring National Park on the doorstep & the magnificent Lake, outdoor enthusiasts have lots to choose from – hiking, biking, fishing, jet boating, kayaking, climbing, skiing & snowboarding.
