Belver Monte do Carmo Hotel Rural, Azaruja

Hotel Description

The Site

The Monte do Carmo Hotel lies on a magical site. Here and in very few other places if we close our eyes for an instant we can feel the mist of spirituality and mysticism capture and seduce us. This power has for centuries attracted pilgrims to the chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel or in Portuguese Nossa Senhora do Carmo. We are taken by the hand into another space and time, taken aback by the tremendous force of the cliff where the chapel sits and by the silence of the vast Alentejo forest of cork oak and holm oak. With half-open eyes we can feel the magnetism of the land and immense sky, we are grateful to be alive in this deserted spot where endless generations have come from the beginnings of time to pay homage to a spiritual force.

The Chapel

As in all sacred places of popular devotion, the history of the chapel of Senhora do Carmo lies as far as back as time itself. Perhaps it was already a place of pilgrimage and cult of ancient pre-christian religions, as is the case in so many other chapels and little churches which exist in the surroundings. It was rebuilt in popular baroque style and its walls have been covered from top to bottom by the famous ex-votos, naive paintings where the population shows its gratitude to Our Lady for the miracles and grace granted. They recreate a living and moving history of a poor people of emigrants, through the miracles on shipwrecks on the way to Brazil, a severe illness or a little donkey that was saved.

The Facilities

Today’s Hotel was built from the centuries-old inns where the pilgrims (feast day on the 2nd Sunday of September) were given shelter when they came to pay homage or to express their gratitude to Senhora do Carmo for any kind of grace granted. There are four blocks built as a square around the church and where modern comfort goes hand in hand with the austerity of the thick walls and the vitality of the traditional materials which are comforting. There is a restaurant and small bar for those who wish for absolute calm and who want to leave the hotel only for a brisk walk around the vast and well kept estate around it. Here in the midst of cork oaks and fields where the only noise is that of the flock of sheep or herd of pigs grazing in the open and the only surprise movement is that of rabbits or hares running away as we pass by, we can appreciate the most precious luxury of our times; true pastoral serenity.

The Surroundings

Monte do Carmo lies in the very heart of Upper Alentejo, in the Serra da Ossa, 2 Km from the town of Azaruja and a few minutes from Évora. Estremoz, Évoramonte, even Spain is a stone’s throw away, excellent for those who want to use their time to visit the endless number of castles, churches and convents and monasteries of one of the least polluted, best keptand prettiest regions of Portugal.
