Not too flash!
When taken into acount that you get what you pay for then this hotel rates as ok. The staff are awesome, very friendly and helpful. But sadly the location is much less than favourable. The proximity to the "red light" area made the experience less than favourable. I would not recommend this hotel to a family group. I have stayed in other hotels in the same area that also proclaimed the proximity of 'red light' without the same experience.
Bad hotel
This hotel not clean , it has roaches , smelt of smoke all the time , customer service bad , unfriendly , RED LIGHT around the hotel .
Just OK
The staff were helpful and friendly.
The Rooms are small and as with other comments the PVC covering on the bed is a discomfort. They should use fitted sheets or find a way to keep the sheets in place. Also the bath room floors should be mopped a little better as mine was dirty. As my stay was just for the night and my family was not with me; this room served my needs. The price, a place to sleep and clean up was all I was looking for. So if my trip to Singapore was only a short stay I would stay here again.
As for the food, I ordered from Pizza Hut and the food was at my door in under 20 mins. I did not have time to visit any local establishments so no reviews on food.
The Area was safe and taxis were easy to get at this location of Hotel 81. Trip to the Airport around 15.00 Singapore Dollars.

room 7-19
Room #7-19. The room is just enough to stay...it is clean. They conduct daily room and toilet cleaning, provided free coffee, mineral water and cable TV. The Air con so cold, have hot water and shower. The shower head need to replace with good quality one but still ok.
It was really cheap and smack in the middle of the red light district. but don't be fooled by this. Its perfectly safe and close to a lot of mom and pop restaurant. Taxi is never a problem there always passing by.
Singapore outskirts
Hotel 81 Star was a very basic hotel,located on the outskirts of the central district,so was very easy and cheap to get to all the main places.Taxi fare into the central district was roughly 5 to 9 SG dollars depending on time of day,maybe better to get hotel to book you a cab on busy nights.Hotel staff were quite friendly and hotel generally clean.Geylang area where hotel is situated,is a red light district,but dont let this put you off, im a single guy by myself and i never had any hassle or problems from any girls,its all very low key,and if you never already knew about this,you would be none the wiser.This was my second stay in the area,and would and probably will go back again.Compared to some of the prices of the hotels in the central district,this is a very good value for money place to stay,dont expect a 4star hotel,its cheap and you get what you pay for.Taxi to and from the airport,roughly 8 to 12 SG dollars,but dont get the limosine taxi,they are more expensive.Have fun
Great budget hotel, on value for money i couldn't fault it! Do note these are a chain, I turned up at the wrong hotel, but they were really helpful, checked which one i was supposed to be at and sorted a cab there for me.
well run great value
firstly be aware that hotel 81 star is quite a ways out from the centre of singapore, hence its good value, there are many hotels in this area, including other hotel 81s, its is a shortish walk too 2 mrt stations, but far better to get the buses in and out which are very convenient, the staff are very helpful and reception is very well staffed, we had free internet which was extremely fast for our whole stay,contrary to other reviewers experience.
the tv was severely lacking in choice of channels but did just qualify as having cable...
nice big bathroom, unlike the cramped bedroom, we booked with our 9 year old and had too share a bed there being no other alternative.
kettele coffee and some free water every day, which helps, also a few okish food places nearby.
the hotel being located in the red light district is not a huge problem, the brothels surrounding are very descrete although there are plenty of shady characters walking about at night, not such a big deal at all, even with a kid in tow.
extremely good value as its tough to find even a basic hostel for cheaper than this, there are hotel 81s in better locations though.
Everything Is Just Normal
hotel location is near the bus station, mrt station need to walk around 10-12mins. 24hrs restaurant near the hotel. if you don't mind red light location at this hotel, just go ahead.
