Most reviews seem to ignore the Dusit...
Most reviews seem to ignore the Dusit Thani in favour of hotels such as the Shangri-La or Mandarin Oriental, but I would certainly advise if you want classic Thai-style 5 star luxury in a more convenient location than any of the hotels on the river this is the place for you.
The service was efficient and extremely hospitable - my husband and I, and the friend we were travelling with all got upgraded. The rooms were beautiful, ours was overlooking Lumphini Park and the swimming pool and the bathroom was superb. They even turn the bed down a night and leave you an orchid...and the oil burner in the bathroom (as well as the TV piped in there) was a lovely touch.
Breakfast was excellent, and the dining room is very grand, looking out onto a fountain. The spa is also a must for a massage - and try to complimentary tea (cold tea comes with a hot towel and vice versa). The gym has very state-of-the-art cardio machines in particular. The pool is a little on the small side - for training you really have to do laps not lengths, but it's secluded and generally not too crowded.
It is also extremely convenient - right next door to the skytrain AND underground station, and you get the Silom street market every night except Monday, and are in walking distance of the infamous Patpong (I would advise you stick to Silom Street for bargains though - at Patpong they give such a high starting price you just don't know how to bargain down!!) Lumphini Park is also great for jogging in the mornings - there is a track marked out running 2.54km or a shorter "half-way" one. In the park you'll also see lots of people doing aerobics, tai-chi and there are even a few outdoor gyms... and if you don't fancy the hotel breakfast (although I can't imagine why not) there is a morning food market too. The Lumphini Park Night Bazaar is also excellent - very well laid out covered shops with an interesting dinner/puppet theatre in the centre.
We all agreed that we would definately stay there again - and having driven to the river hotels, I would honestly say the convenience alone would convince me to stay at the Dusit Thani...and that's even without the luxury you are guaranteed to enjoy.
