Outstanding
Although the Thailand Open Golf players were staying at the hotel which is a good report anyway and many many Police to look after their safety, I requested a smoking room but at the price was not available, despite being pre booked.
no problem!!! free upgrade and what a wonderful room overlooking the river. Great breakfast and would certainly recommend this hotel to anybody.

Royal River hotel Bangkok
My wife and I have stayed in february 2011 for the third time at the Royal River hotel. We had booked a riverside room: spacious and a splendid balcony, overlooking the Chao Phraya. Everything was ok, but the carpet could do with some cleaning. Breakfast is good. Staff is friendly, but when we got the bill before leaving, we had a problem with the amount of the bill. We had booked two days extra a short time before arriving in the Royal River. Those two days ("late booking") were 600 baht per night cheaper than the originally booked nights. The lady in charge of the deskpersonal wanted to have the full payment. It had cost us 20 minutes, but at last we have payed what we had to pay; she was clearly "not amused", but she had received, like we did, an e-mail with the new amount, so the long discussion would not have been necessary. It was a pity of our last minutes in the Royal River hotel, but it won't stop us from booking again next year!

Good hotel but needs the following
we stayed 13 nights. We recommend the following
1. The same breakfast food was boring after 4 days. It needed variation.
2. Channel 14 was the only English speaking tv channell . A dvd recorder or a proper dedicated movie channell is essential. The tv was an old fashion style.
3. A organised courtesy bus to the night and day markets would have been helfull. A small charge would have been fine. The position of the hotel is a long way from the city attractions.
4. A dedicated bar for alcohol and tappas food would been good day and night with music. The karaoke bar or the coffee lounge should be converted.
Otherwise the hotel was excellent in everything else

I went to Bangkok for plastic surgery,...
I went to Bangkok for plastic surgery, so I needed a quiet place close to my hospital. The staff were all friendly and helpful. The view of the river was wonderful. Breakfasts were included--buffet--and were good. There was a nice lobby and indoor/outdoor bar. Since I was not feeling my best after the surgery, I appreciated the quiet, a little away from the center of the city. However, the couple times I did manage to go out, staff was helpful in recommending where/what to do, and cab rides were cheap. Overall, a good stay, but without the "glamour" of some of other big chain hotels I have stayed in.

Hotel was nice enough, good buffet breakfast...
Hotel was nice enough, good buffet breakfast included. Service reasonable but my issues were: 1. No reply from hotel email when I asked for airport transfer. 2. Much too far from airport - approx 40 minutes with no traffic. 3. No tea or coffee in room although there was a kettle and cups etc.. 4. King bed requested and got 2 small doubles.

I’VE TRAVELLED THE WORLD AND STAYED IN...
I’VE TRAVELLED THE WORLD AND STAYED IN HUNDREDS IF NOT THOUSANDS OF HOTELS; THIS WAS WITHOUT DOUBT THE WORST I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. MY WIFE AND I STAYED HERE AS PART OF OUR HONEY MOON AND THANK THE GODS THAT IT WAS THE LAST 2 DAYS. ON ARRIVAL WE WERE GREETED WITH TRAVEL TOUTS (THAT ARE PART OF THE HOTEL) ASKING ME IF I WANTED TO SEE THE SIGHTS FOR JUST 2000 BHATT, I'D ONLY JUST GOT OUT THE TAXI!! WE WERE GIVEN A ROOM THAT DESPITE REQUESTING A DOUBLE BED (WE WERE AFTER ALL NEWLYWEDS AND THIS WAS EMAILED TO THEM) CONTAINED TWO TINY TWIN BEDS. I THEN COMPLAINED AND WE WERE MOVED DOWN THE CORRIDOR TO ANOTHER ROOM WITH A DOUBLE, THE PORTERS HUNG AROUND VERY UNCOMFORTABLY EXPECTING A TIP, LITERALLY WOULDN’T LEAVE UNTIL I TOLD THEM TO. AFTER 2 MINUTES HEARD A SCREAM AS MY PREGNANT WIFE WAS POINTING TO THE SEVERAL COCKROACHES ON THE BED AND ON THE CURTAINS. I THEN REPORTED TO THE FRONT DESK AND WE AGAIN MOVED TO ANOTHER ROOM DOWN THE CORRIDOR. THIS TIME I INSPECTED THE ROOM AND ON PULLING THE BED SHEETS BACK I SAW TO MY HORROR HUMAN HAIR IN THE BED! THIS TIME I WENT DIRECTLY TO THE MANAGER, SHE THEN MOVED US AGAIN TO ANOTHER STANDARD ROOM, WE BOTH CHECKED IT AND IT WAS SATISFACTORY BUT DIRTY IN PLACES. IN SUMMARY THIS HOTEL IS TERRIBLE IT CLAIMS A 4 - 5 STAR RATING BUT IS WAY FAR FROM THAT. I HAVE STAYED IN 1 STAR HOTELS AND HAVE BEEN FAR MORE SATISFIED. WE ARE A COUPLE IN OUR THIRTIES AND I’M A MILITARY MAN SO I'M PRETTY THICK SKINNED BUT THIS HOTEL WAS A NIGHTMARE. THE BREAKFAST WAS COLD AND TASTELESS AND NO EFFORT WAS MADE IN PRESNTATION OR PREPARATION. WHAT MADE ME MOST ANGRY WAS THAT NO UPGRADE OR TOKEN OR GESTURE WAS MADE, IT BASICALLY RUINED THE LAST DAYS OF OUR HONEYMOON.

A hotel with a beautiful outlook over...
A hotel with a beautiful outlook over the river but quite a long way from main sites and shopping areas. However we found the service, with the exception of the concierges, not to be of the standard we have come to expect in Thailand. reception staff not friendly or very helpful. We had expected complimentary coffee and tea making facilities but were told we would have to pay for these. Breakfast very mediocre. Glad we only had one night here.

As others have stated, the deluxe room...
As others have stated, the deluxe room is quite large, with a king-sized bed and balcony view of the river. For $60 a night, it's perfect for romantic couples. Room service was fairly quick and the food was acceptable--nothing was bad. The only drawbacks to the hotel are (1) The cable TV has only four English channels, and they're a pathetic lot: Good, BBC is there, but other than that there's just ESPN low-class version, some other useless channel that I can't even remember, and a TV-series channel for 14-year-olds that shows only CSI-Miami and NY but mostly stupid sports like basketball players on trampolines. (2) Late at night I often found a cockroach or two in the bathroom and one time a half-grown one on my bedside table.

Firstly let me say that we LOVED...
Firstly let me say that we LOVED the Royal River hotel because of it's position on the river. However we feel that the hotel has seen better days and wish someone would put some money into restoring it to it's former glory. Not much is needed, just replacing a few bulbs that light up the terrace etc and a few other touches are required. The hotel really is a nice place that needs a little TLC. Unfortunately it seems to rely more on "convention" type of functions rather than staying guests, so it seems quite quiet especially in the low season. We liked our large room with a good sized balcony overlooking the river. It was great to sit there having a drink before bed and still be able to watch the golf from UK on the TV. We also liked the friendliness of the staff, but we know to expect that in Thailand. We were too lazy to go and eat breakfast so can't tell what it was like, sorry. The local ferries from the hotel were very frequent, so we recommend that as the best form of transport for going further into the city. The only downsides to the hotel would be the fact that is is quite far from many of the tourist sites in Bangkok, and that it is quite expensive to go there from the airport in a taxi. Many drivers do not know it and need to stop to ask directions. However the area of central Pinklao is nearby and has shopping malls, street stalls etc for those who would like to pick up a bargain or two. Hotel laundry charges are crazy, as are the prices offered right outside the entrance - far higher than any area of Thailand we have visited. All in all I would say that the hotel is fine for anyone who is not frightened of being away from the main toursit areas and can use the local transport, although the nearest skytrain stop is Victory Monument, about 20 mins in a taxi. I may use it again for sure.
