Good value for money, fantastic breakfast, excellent location and rooms cleaned daily. Hotel decor is a bit drab but great for the price and the air con and pool was a much appreicaited luxury when escaping Bangkok's awful humidity.

Although the Royal Hotel in Bangkok has...
Although the Royal Hotel in Bangkok has an excellent location for exploring some of the big tourist attractions in the city, this feature and the clean bathroom are the sum of its positive attributes. The front desk staff were unusually abrupt and probably the only unfriendly/unhelpful Thai people we encountered on our trip. The room we had was small, with no windows and nothing hanging on the walls. There was visible water damage on the ceiling and the street noise was relentless. The worst part however was that the bed sheets were dirty, to include hairs and other personal grime. One last thing, the breakfast was quite limited and everything was left to get cold except the coffee and the toast. Although we booked two nights at this hotel, we checked out after only one and moved to a different hotel that was more expensive but a much better value.

I found it hard to believe the value received for the price paid. The service is excellent. The amenities are terrific. I can't imagine ever staying any where else in Bangkok.

May 2005. This was my third visit to the Royal hotel. Rooms are slightly tired but very clean, well maintained and good value for the price. Breakfast is included and again good value. Location is good for sightseeing ( a little close to the many unwashed dreadlocked tie-dyed unadventurous travellers of Kho San Rd). That probably explains the sometimes abrupt staff at front desk, too many farangs trying to get something for nothing, but I have never had any problem and always found staff to be helpful. Only complaint - don't use the taxis inside the lobby, they are very very expensive when compared to walking out into the street and flagging down a passing taxi.

I stayed at the Royal hotel several...
I stayed at the Royal hotel several times because the location is great if you like to walk the sights and escape to quite backstreets from the roaring traffic. The hotel itself is nothing special. The rooms are rundown but clean. The bathrooms are OK. The breakfast is very unspectacular. What is not OK by any means is the service at the front desk. They treat you like a criminal. There was a mixed up booking, I still needed to pay for an additional night. (of course they always keep a blanc invoice of your credit card until you leave). They called me in the middle of the afternoon demanding that I pay immediately, even thou the situation was already discussed and settled with staff two days previous. The treatment reminded me of my days in the military. After they were satisfied I tried to raise the issue of friendliness and manners in a very polite way but I could just as well have spoken against a brick wall with the difference that a wall wouldn’t offend me. They actually told me that I could be a criminal and so they better be sure. No smile, no apologies. This is just completely unacceptable behavior to me, especially in the land of smiles. I have witnessed similar situations at the Royal with other guests. If you like to be abused, go there, if you prefer a friendly and respectful treatment better go somewhere else.

Royal Hotel was excellent for the price!  The room was cleaned everyday - sheets and towels changed.  Our flight back to the UK was not until midnight and we were able to rent the room out until 8pm for half the price of a full night which was really handy!

We stayed in this hotel at the end of October 2004. Our room was quite OK. But our friends had to change the room twice, because the two previous ones smelled bad. If they give you a room you do not like - just ask for a change. The receptioninst were quite kind. The localisation is very good - close to major "touristic" buildings. Breakfast - very good, both Asian type and European type of food. The pool was not too large, but with clean water. Generally, this hotel needs to be renovated. Anyway, for some $20 (i.e. approx. 820 THB) - our room was worth the money. If you'd like to get the room not through internet, the hotel would charge you about 1600 THB (we asked at the reception, because we wanted to book this room for the days we were coming back to Bangkok from Krabi). My rating refers to the room we got only and takes into account the price we paid for it: 7/10

Near Grand Palace and Kao San Rd., far from the noisy downtown. Simple but clear room, the receptionists are friendly. The breakfast has various kinds to choose from and delicious. It's a valuable place to stay.

The hotel is quite adequate considering the price. It is close to many of the tourist attractions, but if you want to do some shopping then you need to take a taxi elsewhere.
