Every trip to Bangkok I try to...
Every trip to Bangkok I try to stay in the Majestic Grande. This trip I decided to try the standard room. They're appointed in much the same way as the superior rooms, but much smaller. The bathrooms are smaller, too, with combo tub/showers instead of separate showers.
The rooms are very nice except for one big problem, prevalent to all the rooms. The A/C system is positively antediluvian. They're the kind where the fan blows, rather loudly, all night. The temperature setting just causes the A/C compressor to kick on and off, but the fan speed never varies. I find it difficult to sleep for the first couple of days. For a hotel of this caliber, they should have more a more modern HVAC system.
Other than that, the facilities are first-rate. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly. The food is good. A tip is to have your breakfast in the ground-floor Italian restaurant instead of the main coffee shop. You'll sacrifice a tiny bit of variety, and they no longer have the omelette station on the ground floor, but the coffee quality more than makes up for it, and it has a much more relaxed ambiance.
The location is great, but a bit off Sukhumwit. It's an easy walk to Suk., and an easy walk to the Skytrain. Just avoid the taxi sharks who lurk outside the door. Walk a bit and get one down the street a bit.
