A Great Alternative
Cha am makes a very nice alternative to Huahin which, these days, is very crowded and busy. This hotel is well situated right across the road from the beach, with easy access to local shops and restaurants. The beach is quite pleasant, although very crowded with locals at weekends. Midweek is much nicer. Taxis to Huahin are very expensive though.
The hotel is excellent value for money -- a boutique hotel with nice decor and a rooftop pool. At the time of writing the hotel was undergoing extensive upgrades, adding many more rooms, a new swimming pool, and a water slide for kids. These upgrades did not cause any disturbance as they are a long way back on the building plot. The hotel restaurant (where breakfast is served) is modern and provides a simple, but pleasant breakfast (buffet when busy, menu when only a few guests), with eggs, bacon, sausages, fruit, yoghurt, toast, fruit juice and coffee.
The staff were some of the friendliest we have encountered in Thailand, and knew us by name.
In fact the only two downsides to the hotel are the endemic pigeon population (not a fault of the hotel's); and the noisy street in front of the hotel. These pigeons left considerable mess on our balcony (we had an ocean view superior), and also left mess on the pool deck where they went to drink. At night (especially weekends) the street was very noisy until late, with unsilenced motorbikes, and music playing. This noise mainly affects rooms towards the front of the hotel -- especially oceanview superior rooms. The new block is further back and will be less affected.
Overall a very nice hotel, offering exceptional value for money compared with Huahin.
