We stayed at the Empress for 4...
We stayed at the Empress for 4 days and overall a great time there while we were in Chiang Mai. This was one of few hotels where I could get a reasonably priced triple for my family of 4. Room size was sufficient and clean. Great international buffet breakfast, especially since it's part of room price. Good dim sum buffet lunch at the Chinese restaurant and efficient room service with a nice choice of menu selections. International buffet lunch was so-so.
My children age 8 and 12 enjoyed the outdoor pool everyday. Limited English speaking TV channels and no free wifi. 1 hr internet service for 150 baht was too expensive. Place right outside hotel was 40 baht for 1 hr.
Free hourly shuttle service to the Central Airport Mall and back to hotel was not reliable. Taxi to Mall was more expensive when you use the hotel desk to call a car, 200 baht vs. 120 baht when and if you find a taxi yourself. Taxis are not as frequent by the Empress.
Hotel is conveniently located near photo stores, custom tailors, mini marts/7-11, tuk-tuks, massage places, internet place and laundry service. Nice Italian restaurant and steak place within a 5 min. walk to the left of the hotel.
Being in Chiang Mai over Songkran(Thai New Year) was much more fun and safer than being in BKK, especially since many BKK shopping malls and areas were closed due to the red shirt protests.
Overall, for it's value, I would definitely recommend the hotel to friends and family.
