Amora Tapae Hotel Chiang Mai initially was not bad, the location is central and the rooms are ok (not great), the bed is hard as a rock and really hard to sleep on. The room has a unusable key entry which requires you to keep the key in the wall to enjoy Air Conditioning - this creates a sauna like effect when you return to your room and need to cool down. The Breakfast is mediocre and not worth the extra money you pay for it (better walk 2 minutes down the road to Starbucks or other breakfast place).
The staff are rude and inexperienced and will argue with you about pretty much anything.
A promise or a gesture should not be misunderstood, anything they tell you should be double checked in advanced as they tell you that it never happened.
In specific, I had a terrible experience sending laundry. I called to the front desk several times and then to house keeping and requested Express Service as I was down to my last cloths. I had agreed with House Keeping and the front desk that I will pay 50% extra for laundry if my clothing is returned by 10:00am to my room (at the latest I would accept was noon).
At 12:30pm the next day, I walked down to the front desk and inquired about my laundry (obviously no express service) and by 01:30pm got my laundry to the room.
The hotel send some rude front desk person telling me that I will be charged the extra 50% even when I got my laundry late.
Here is the worst:
At Checkout, I was held hostage with my bill and the front desk manager held my Credit Card and would not return it to me unless I signed the bill. I had asked that they remove the 50% extra charge for Laundry and after 10 calls to house keeping they insisted on all kinds of nonsense excuses why my laundry was not delivered. They would not credit my account the 50% price difference (I was willing to pay the full amount for Laundry, just not the extra 50%).
Getting a Taxi outside the hotel is close to impossible, you are constantly approached by Tok Tok vendors and if you want a Taxi you are required to call in advance or use the inflated hotel fares.
Internet is only available at the business center for inflated amounts. Grab your laptop or walk behind the hotel (takes 20 seconds) and you have internet cafe's at normal prices (15 Baht per 15 minutes, etc).
The experience at the checkout was so horrible that I will NEVER return to this hotel. I was treated rudely and unbecoming to a guest. It was hard to believe that I was in Thailand where the Thai are legendary for their hospitality.
