Tharathip
Tharathip was much better than expected after having booked it before reading lots of scathing reviews on Tripadvisor. Don's expect more than basic, backpacker type accommodation though and I thought it was a bit overpriced than what it was worth. It was also very evident that they are trying to make as much money as they can by maintaining only just acceptable accommodation. This is best demonstrated by the fact they are in the process of extending whilst the existing facilities are in dire need of maintenance. Good points were:
* Clean room
* Nice ocean view from both room and restaurant
* Quiet location yet close enough to Haad Rin and Thong Sala
* Food is excellent and well priced (dinner - breakfast came with the room) however meat dishes only have a tiny amount of meat, flavours fantastic though
Negative points:
* Don't expect a swimmable beach - warm and slimy / muddy sand
* Needs maintenance
* Strange smells coming from water fountain
* Won't call a taxi for you, you need to use their car at an inflated price
* Bathroom appeared clean enough but suspiciously dark. Spent as little time showering as possible.
All in all I think there would be better places to stay on Koh Phangan at a better price. Also the Thais are industrious and opportunistic which can be admired if subtle however this was annoyingly blatant .
