Not a very nice experience
My wife & I just returned from 5 days here and have to summarise as "not a very nice experience".
We arrived and were quite shocked at the run down condition of the building & grounds and mis representation of the property when compared to the suite of lovely internet photos'. The lawns were unkempt (as opposed to natural surrounds), the deluxe balconies had grass some 5 foot high and not an umbrella to be seen. (Unlike the promotional photos which are clearly very old representations of better days gone by). On the 3rd day, activity started to 'clean up' the grounds and some (older) umbrellas appeared so it begun to look much better. However, when consideration is given to the price charged in comparison to other nicer nearby hotels it is too far much to pay as the property is not much beyond a back packers lodge. Breakfast was actually a very nice morning event and the staff were pleasant. The massage ladies affiliated with the hotel on the beach were excellent.
This property has undergone a management change of recent which was on display at the front of the property and a full suite of new managers and staff were being sought after. We were initially tolerant of the deficiencies giving credit to the ownership change.
The experience concluded with my wife & I effectively accused of 'stealing' a bottle opener from the room by management which was simply disgraceful. The house maid came into our room before we had finished packing, clearly under management directive to do a check and found there was no wine opener in the room. Upon checkout we were challenged as to the whereabouts of this item and then asked to sign a declaration at that "we believed the item was not in the room to prevent a charge being levied on us for the missing item":. We were appaled as it was not there in the first place and another example of the property delivering a back packers level of customer respect and value.

Room was a lot smaller than the ones shown on the web site. Our shower had no hot water for two days and needed replacing. When we complained once we were paying they only offered $15aud off the price. Nice pool and good location but not up to 4 star resort standards.

This was one of the good hotels I stayed in, I went with my family it was kind of embarassing as the set up is for honeymooners. the location was at beach front which though depressing at night was breathtaking in the morning. the room was arranged in thai traditional style which was a bit of adjusting for us as we prefered western style luxury hotels.
I really enjoyed my stay because of its location, the beach front, and courteous staff.would probably visit again but definately not with family !

Perfect pool, right on the beach. Nice staff and good location, quiet but close to town. Hotel is all on beach side of the road, many places here you have to cross the road to get back to your room / restaurant. Just a little expensive.

I am surprised that this hotel appears...
I am surprised that this hotel appears alongside The Library on Design Hotels' website. The Muang Kulaypan is quite literally an expanse of grey concrete, more reminisent of a 1970s English town center/prison block, than anything resembling chic. The hotel decor is looking tired and a lick of paint here and there is NOT going to renovate this place into a design classic, anytime fast.
After booking a Deluxe Inao room and receiving confirmation of this from the hotel, we arrived at the hotel only to be informed that these were fully booked and were instead offered an "upgrade"... to an inferior room. [My partner later discovered that the Deluxe Inao rooms were not fully booked, but undergoing renovation]
Fortunately we were able to utilise the hotel's emailed confirmation as leverage and eventually were able to negotiate with the Hotel's manager who kindly offered us a significant upgrade. Unfortunately the upgrade, whilst spacious, was not at all homely and the cockroaches in the bathroom, not welcome!
In the evening, the hotel's grey restaurant failed to attract custom and was therefore generally vacant and devoid of life. As a result of this, we escaped to the Amari Palm (next door) on most evenings!
On a plus note the Salas at the beachfront are a great place to eat breakfast or relax with a drink while the staff were also extremely attentive and friendly.
In summary, I would not recommend this hotel as it totally fails to deliver what it promises. Your time on Samui would be far better spent elsewhere.

Unfortunately the Muang Kulaypan in Samui did...
Unfortunately the Muang Kulaypan in Samui did not come up to our specifications. We were looking for something more suited to our needs, which we found not to be the case. There was no lobby or somewhere to relax (apart from in the room)and although the garden was beautiful there was nowhere to sit and take in the view.
The staff were very pleasant and helpful.
Next time we will do our research on the internet much more thoroughly.

I had a wonderful stay in Muang...
I had a wonderful stay in Muang Kulaypan in october 2007. The Hotel is located at the quite northend of Chaweng beach and it is only a short walk to the busy chaweng centre with all the retaurants and bars.
The hotel has a nice garden with a beautiful pool and the rooms are spacious and comfortable.
The hotel restaurant offers a good variety of tasty meals.
The best about the hotel though is the fantastic staff which offers service from the heart and made my stay an unforgetable one. I hope i will soon have the chance to stay here again.

very nice hotel. Great service and good rooms. Quiet, lovely pool and beach. Great restaurant with out door seating. Only negative - check rates on international call before dialing, they are very high.
