My finance and I stayed at Karon Princess Hotel (Superior Semi Seaview) from 14 May to 18 May 2008. It was an off-peak season, so the hotel stay was very affordable (SGD$50/night).
The hotel staff were very polite and friendly, most of them could speak English. We stated that we were on honeymoon on AsiaRooms, and were pleasantly surprised that our room was nicely decorated with rose petals. The room size is pretty ok, there is a balcony with a little seaview (no wonder it is called "Semi" Seaview). The bathroom has a "window" above the bathtub which opens into the room (useful when soaking in the bathtub and watching TV). During our stay, we experienced power failure thrice, each lasting about half an hour. After that, the TV did not have HBO and Cinemax channels for several hours. =(
As far as we could tell, there is a restaurant overlooking the beach, swimming pool and massage services. The breakfast spread was average, but we really liked the omelette with cheese (yummy!). The swimming pool was ok. We dared not patronise the massage services as there were many flies when we were perusing the menu outside (the packages were relatively cheap though). =/
The hotel is located at the beach front, where you can see amazing sunsets. The waves were too strong though, and there are warning signs prohibiting swimming, thus we did not venture into the sea. There are also no sea sports, but there are many beach chairs available for rent, so I guess you can only suntan at Karon beach. There are shops, restaurants, bars, tour agencies, massage shops, etc within walking distance. But having said that, Karon beach is really quiet as compared to Patong beach, there was not much to do and explore.
Karon Princess Hotel is definitely value for money for budget travelers who prefer a calm and serene holiday. For Phuket first-timers (like us), perhaps staying at Patong beach would be a better choice.
