Overall, my family had fun in Bangtao Bay Phuket because of the place and partially the proximity of the hotel to the beach, which is immediately in front of the beach. That's about the only good thing about the hotel. Our bad experience with this hotel was due to several incidences during our 5-day stay.
Firstly, they did not provide the additional bed we asked for and agreed upon in the emails. Upon checking into the room, we had to ask for it again. The family room was OK for my family of 2 Adults and 4 kids, but the place was not cleaned properly. The bathroom was the worst. On the first night, there was no water for almost an hour. On the second night, the water was brown for almost an hour. When we called Housekeeping, the lady came with 2 plumbing staff. When they turned on the tap, brown water came out briefly and then cleared, and clear water appeared. They looked at me nonchalantly as if to say "....there's nothing wrong." They did not even say word to explain the water condition but instead gave me that accusatory look to suggest that I need not have called them.....
Another problem with the wing where all the family rooms are located is the repeated power failures. On average, we experienced at least one power failure per day.....and we were not even in our room 24hours.....so it's not hard to imagine how frequent power failures occur in the Hotel.
The facilities are Ok, but the kids pool was quite dirty, perhaps from the children that transit from the beach immediately to the pool without showering - hence bringing in the sand from the beach. Perhaps having a filtration system for the kids pool would be good as the kids pool seemed to be just an enclosed shallow pool without any pump system to suck out the water and pump in filtered water......
Location was good as it was near the beach. However getting out of the area to Patong and elsewhere may be a problem as taxis do not travel that area. Hence we're at the mercy of the taxi touts in front of the hotel - generally 600 Baht to Patong one-way. The Hotel's taxi charges were more costly.
Buffet breakfast every morning was good. Selection of food was good. However the staff/waitresses seemed gloomy and they do not smile. Must be the early morning hours. The first morning when we were there, the staff greeted us at the entrance of the restaurant to take down my room number. After that, she left us alone and did not bother to show us to the table. We were left to enter the restaurant to look around for a table to accommodate 6 of us. There were none, and we had to ask other staff to join tables for us. This is certainly not the right way to treat the guests at restaurants.....leaving them to find their own seats.....
The Housekeeping seems understaffed as we always see the same lady and she seems to do things grudgingly. Once my toddler son accidentally urinated in bed (on the additional portable bed that was put into the room). Before we left the room for town, we took off the covers so that it can be clearly seen by Housekeeping that the mattress, blanket and covers needs to be changed. When we returned after lunch, only the covers were new. The mattress had merely been turned over and the blanket was still the same one. The turned-over mattress was not a proper solution as the urine had soaked through to the other side. So I informed the Housekeeping lady and she grudgingly said OK. It is appalling that the hotel has such poor hygiene and Housekeeping standards.
Lastly, we had lots of problems at Check-out. Two nights before the check-out date, I specifically requested for Late Check-out as we were leaving for the Airport at 5pm. The reception that answered my call said OK. I was delighted. To my horror, on the last day, after 12pm, upon returning from the pool, my family was not able to access our room. When I went to the reception with my card, the receptionist reminded me, with a seemingly accusatory tone, that check-out was at 12pm. I told her that I knew that and that I had also made a request for Late Check-out for 5pm and it was approved. She then called her duty manager. Just then we were interrupted by a 'screaming' and rude American lady, shouting profanities, that the receptionist who had just answered her calls hung-up on her 3 times. Well, I guess she had every reason to be mad if she got hung-up on the line 3 times while in a situation where she needed help - because she could not access her safe and she needed money to bring her hungry kids for lunch..... Whatever the situation, I found it rude that the 2 hotel staff attending to me immediately attended to the complaining lady without even saying a word to me to excuse themselves. They just left me and attended to the lady 2 metres away.....Talk about being polite. The staff here needs some serious training on courtesy.....
After they had settled the matter with the lady, they came back to me and the senior one (I assumed the duty manager)informed me that I have to pay for Late Check-out. I explained that the receptionist who answered my phone allowed the late check-out, but she insisted that I had to pay. I told her that it was not acceptable as I was not told that I have to pay for Late Check-outs, and if I was informed of that, I would have packed up and checked-out in time by 12pm. Hence I asked for time to pack-up my family and I was given 2 hours, till 2.30pm. Imagine, while all these were going on, my family was stuck outside, and wet from the pool, for about 20 minutes. Luckily they were allowed in by the Housekeeping staff while I was trying to sort out the activation of the Key Card Access to the room.
It seems that the Staff in the hotel are not trained adequately and they do not communicate well. The common occurrence I encountered was that they tend to reply "yes" without fully understanding what the guest had requested...it may be a cultural way where the Thais say "chai" or "karp" during conversations. I encountered this even at the Hotel's restaurant with the waitress during dinner. But if they simply translate this to English and keep saying "yes", misunderstandings may occur and the guest may think that his/her request was approved. Tourists who are new to Thailand should be cautious on this. Not all "yes" means Yes.
This was my fourth holiday to Phuket, and by far the worst place I have ever stayed in. Totally bad experience!!!
