We booked a superior Baan Thai room...
We booked a superior Baan Thai room at the Tharaburi - in a separate building with shared bathroom. The room was large and airy, comfortable bed, nice furnishings and clean. The superior rooms in the Baan Thai have TV and fridge. Whilst the bathrooms are shared there are actually 4 between 7 rooms and as we were there in low season this was fine - even in high season this should be a pretty good ratio to avoid any long queues I would think. This is also great value if you don't absolutely have to have an ensuite - we paid 12GBP a night for a double room with breakfast (and you get to use the same facilities - i.e. the fab swimming pool - as the guests paying almost 3 times that in the ensuite rooms).
The hotel has a lovely pool which was a welcome relief after a day going round the old city. The restaurant is pretty good - breakfast is nothing amazing but plenty of toast, coffee/tea, a serving of fruit and choice of eggs.
Location is excellent for the old city and ruins. About 2kms away - 10/15mins walk or 5mins by tuk-tuk. The hotel can arrange a tuk-tuk for a few hours to take you to the main sights (we saw most things in 3 hours) or can arrange bikes for hire if you feel like the exercise.
There are also a number of slightly cheaper restaurants on the road near the old city if you don't fancy eating at the hotel.
My only slightly negative comment about the hotel is that when we stayed there was some pretty stagnant water sitting in the ornamental pools around the property.
