Adelaide in Australia is one of the most populated cities of the country. The beauty and unique weather has a played a major role in bringing about an increase in the Adelaide population.

Adelaide was originally home to the Kaurna Aboriginal tribe. These people occupied the area in the Adelaide plains, starting from Cape Jervis in the south to Port Wakefield in the north. These people were however completely wiped out by the European settlers. In the year 1852, the population of the Kaurna people stood at 650 as per a census count.

Over the years, with increase in economic activity and the unique location of the city near the port led to an increase in the population of the city. As on 2002-2003, the population of Adelaide grew at a steady rate of 0.6%. At that time the national average was around 1.2%. A majority of the people of South Australia, nearly 70.3% live in this beautiful city. The city experienced population growth mainly in its suburbs.

The population of Adelaide consists of students, overseas-born Adelaideans and the local inhabitants. The population of Adelaide consists of a unique mixture of English, Irish, German, Vietnamese, Italian, Greek and Polish people. As per statistical data, 38% of the people are English, 34% are Australians, 3.5% were Italian, 1.2% are Vietnamese, 0.7% Polish and German, while the Greeks consist of 2.3% of the population.

As on June 2004, the population of Adelaide was 1,124,315. By virtue of this humongous number, the city became the fifth largest city of Australia. Records show that the percentage of people falling above the age of 55 is higher. In fact, nearly 24.1% of the Adelaide population is above 55 years of age. The percentage of children is also less, accounting for nearly 18.7% of the total population. The number of people with university level qualification account for nearly 17.9% while those with vocational qualifications account for 52.4% as per the 2001 census.

Adelaide population is however slowly increasing, with economic growth and development. Because of this reason, the city is also slowly expanding.
